MCPS: Five Things To Know

1. Nearly 200 Students Receive Inaugural Rales-O’Neill $10,000 Scholarships: The Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Educational Foundation has announced 194 recipients of the 2023 Ruth and Norman Rales-Patricia Baier O’Neill Scholarship Recognizing Academic Excellence. These prestigious scholarships are being awarded to high-achieving graduating seniors in all 25 high schools. 2. Register Today for the Annual College Fair: Representatives from more than 300 colleges and universities will be on hand at the annual Montgomery County National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) National College Fair on Tuesday, April 18 and Wednesday, April 19 at the Maryland Soccerplex, 18031 Central Park Circle in Boyds. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days and is open to Grade 11 students attending with their schools. The fair is also open to high school students and their families from 6:30–8 p.m. on April 18.

3. 2nd Annual Youth Climate Summit Set for April 22:

MCPS is hosting the 2nd Annual Youth Climate Summit on Saturday, April 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Tilden Middle School. The student-led event is designed to educate MCPS students about climate change and equip them with tools to create climate action projects to bring back to their communities. Students will speak with environmental mentors, collaborate with student leaders, pick up environmental information and grow as activists. Students who participate will receive Student Service Learning (SSL) hours. Tilden Middle School is located at 6300 Tilden Lane in Rockville. Event details and registration

 

4. Hallie Wells Middle School Assistant Principal Wins Ed Shirley Award: Beth F. Thomas, assistant principal at Hallie Wells Middle School, is the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Edward Shirley Award for Excellence in Educational Administration and Supervision. This prestigious award, given by the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (MCAAP), is presented annually to an administrator or supervisor who exemplifies outstanding leadership and accomplishments in purposeful leadership, instructional or systemwide leadership, human resources development, resource management, interpersonal skills, professional involvement, and community and stakeholder involvement. 5. Bright Spots This Week

Richard Montgomery School Mock Trial Teams Wins State Championship: Congratulations to the Richard Montgomery Mock Trial team who won the 2023 Maryland Mock Trial State Championship. The team completed a remarkable undefeated 11-0 season. The state mock trial competition features over 140 schools competing against each other throughout the school year.
