In July we let you know that the Best Buy space located at 15750 Shady Grove Rd. in Gaithersburg’s 270 Center will be “coming available” on February 1st 2025. Last month, we confirmed that the store will be closing permanently on October 26th– approximately 30 years after opening in the mid 90s.
The store has been relatively bare for a few weeks without many major sales left as most items will be transported to nearby locations. As of September 2024, Best Buy has 1,053 stores across the country. In March, Best Buy stated that the company closed 24 stores last year and it was reported that Best Buy planned to close between 10 to 15 stores nationwide by mid-2025.
The reactions to the store’s closure on social media have been mixed with some remembering Best Buy fondly with others questioning the business model in today’s world. Some social media comments include:
• Wow! Not that surprising given the large footprint, online competition for their products and how few people I’d see in there… will be interesting to see what replaces them.
• Very sad news
• In-store retail is a slow dying business. Expect more of this.
• There are 3 Best Buys within the immediate area. Rockville Gburg and Germantown. I can see why they would want to close one of them.
• Where will I go when I need to decide on which item that I’ll ultimately buy for less on Amazon?
• Where am I going to get my $11.99 CDs every Tuesday now?
klnb has been marketing the space for the last few months as a “rare box opportunity” for 46,155 square feet with a virtual tour of the location also available on the klnb website. As far as we are aware, there are currently no plans to close nearby locations in Germantown and Rockville.
