As 2024 winds down, we wanted to share with you some of the most-read articles of 2024. This article was originally published on October 26th, 2024, when Best Buy Gaithersburg closed its doors permanently. We’ve added reader reactions to the story below:
In July we let you know that the Best Buy space located at 15750 Shady Grove Rd. in Gaithersburg’s 270 Center will be “coming available” on February 1st 2025. Last month, we confirmed that the store will be closing permanently on October 26th– approximately 30 years after opening in the mid 90s.
The store has been relatively bare for a few weeks without many major sales left as most items will be transported to nearby locations. As of September 2024, Best Buy has 1,053 stores across the country. In March, Best Buy stated that the company closed 24 stores last year and it was reported that Best Buy planned to close between 10 to 15 stores nationwide by mid-2025.
Best Buy currently has additional Montgomery County locations at 20914 Frederick Rd in Germantown, 1200 Rockville Pike in Rockville, and 10901 Georgia Ave in Wheaton. 270 Center is also home to Home Depot, Nordstrom Rack, and the recently opened Amazon Fresh. Readers chimed in with the following on Best Buy’s closure:
• I have some of the best memories at that Best Buy. I got all my PlayStations there, like every single one.
• I used to work there and we were like a family. Will be missed for sure.
• Wow! Not that surprising given the large footprint, online competition for their products and how few people I’d see in there… will be interesting to see what replaces them.
• Very sad news
• In-store retail is a slow dying business. Expect more of this.
• There are 3 Best Buys within the immediate area. Rockville Gburg and Germantown. I can see why they would want to close one of them.
• Where will I go when I need to decide on which item that I’ll ultimately buy for less on Amazon?
• We camped out for PlayStation 2 outside of that Best Buy and the employees were so cool about it. They made sure it all went well, great memories.
• Where am I going to get my $11.99 CDs every Tuesday now?
