As colder weather approaches and the potential for winter storms looms in January, we take a closer look at the winter outlooks from the four major networks in the D.C. area. While there hasn’t been much winter weather to discuss so far, it’s crucial to remember that winter is just beginning (we are about ten days into) with plenty of opportunities for snowfall and frigid temperatures still ahead.
The NBC4 outlook predicts that most of Montgomery County will receive between 13 to 20 inches, with southern regions expecting 6 to 13 inches. In contrast, northern areas, including Frederick and Washington counties, may see accumulations of 20 to 28 inches. Their meteorologists are also keeping a close eye on the possibility of a shift from a weak La Niña phase to a neutral pattern, which could lead to increased snowfall as the winter season unfolds.
The FOX5 outlook may be disappointing for snow enthusiasts. Their projections indicate that most of the D.C. Metro area can expect only 4 to 10 inches of snow for the entire season, with northern regions anticipating slightly more, at 8 to 16 inches. This forecast represents the lowest snowfall predictions among the four major networks.
The ABC7 outlook predicts 5-10” this winter for Gaithersburg and areas south like DC and Prince George’s County, while Germantown and areas north like Frederick County are in the 10-15” range.
WUSA9 offers the most optimistic snowfall forecast for snow lovers among the major networks, predicting totals of 10 to 20 inches for Washington, D.C., and its immediate surroundings. For parts of Montgomery County, including Gaithersburg, Germantown, Clarksburg, and Damascus, the projection rises to 20 to 30 inches. Additionally, most of Loudoun County, all of Frederick County, and parts of Howard County are also expected to fall within the 20 to 30-inch range.
