Safeway to Close Permanently in April

Several employees reached out to let us know that Safeway will be closing its 1800 Rockville Pike store located on the ground level of the Galvan at Twinbrook complex. On Sunday morning, a store manager confirmed that the store was recently informed of its impending closure.

When the store opened, it was considered the replacement for two nearby Safeway locations that closed– Loehmann’s Plaza on Randolph Rd. and Twinbrook Center on Veirs Mill Rd. The store is currently planned to close in April of this year and a manager of the store has let us know that signage will soon go up regarding the closure (none was up as of Sunday morning, February 2).

Wegmans is opening a new store later this year less than a half mile away, which may have attributed to the decision to close the store. Safeway has additional Rockville locations in the Rock Creek Village shopping center on Norbeck Rd., the Fallsgrove Village Center on Shady Grove Rd. and on Redland Blvd. in the King Farm Development.
