Montgomery County Animal Shelter Restores Air Conditioning After Urgent Call for Short-Term Fosters

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) at 7315 Muncaster Mill Rd. in Derwood has fully restored air conditioning following a mechanical failure that caused rising temperatures inside its near-capacity facility. The issue, caused by a failed motor in the building’s cooling system, was resolved by the Department of General Services (DGS). With the system now fully operational, the shelter has ended its emergency response efforts and resumed normal operations.

The temporary AC outage prompted an urgent call for short-term foster homes to protect animals from the heat. Conditions were safely managed during the outage, and approximately 40 medically vulnerable animals were placed in temporary foster homes as a precaution.

MCASAC thanked the community for its swift support during the critical time and continues to encourage residents to consider fostering or adopting. Even though the crisis has passed, animals still benefit from being placed in loving homes. Residents can begin the adoption process online by completing the adoption questionnaire or walk in during open hours. Adopters should be prepared to bring their new pet home at the end of their visit. Full details on how to adopt or foster are available at montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/adoption/howtoadopt.
