Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich addressed the shooting inside Wootton High School that occurred this past Monday, calling the incident “horrible” and extending thoughts to the victim and the Wootton community following a difficult week.
In his weekly message, Elrich said the incident prompted discussion around school safety, emergency response, and related issues during his media briefing. He emphasized coordination among multiple agencies and thanked the Rockville Police Department, Montgomery County Police Department, Montgomery County Public Schools, the mayor of Rockville, and the State’s Attorney’s Office for working together throughout the response.
Elrich also acknowledged the role of additional county resources that were present during and after the incident, including Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service, the Department of Transportation, county and municipal Emergency Management, and staff from his office. He noted that the Department of Health and Human Services has been working with school and community partners to provide mental and emotional support to students and families. He also highlighted the availability of Montgomery County’s 24/7 crisis center at 240-777-4000.
Addressing broader concerns about school safety, Elrich said he welcomes continued dialogue with Montgomery County Public Schools and the County Council but cautioned against oversimplifying the issue. He said the challenge is not a straightforward problem with an easy fix, and pointed to the superintendent’s approach of combining personnel, technology, and policy as offering the strongest opportunity to improve safety across schools.
Elrich noted that while the incident was deeply troubling, the county was fortunate that it did not result in additional victims or a fatality. He added that no school community is immune to these kinds of tragedies, pointing to a recent deadly school shooting in British Columbia as a reminder of the broader scope of the issue.
He concluded by urging continued advocacy for sensible gun laws, greater investment in mental health resources, and sustained support for children and families. His full weekly message can be seen here.
