NFL insider Adam Schefter is adding fuel to the conversation around the Washington Commanders’ draft plans, suggesting one of the top prospects in the class could land in DC.
Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, Schefter said running back Jeremiyah Love could be a strong fit for Washington. “Jeremiyah Love is a top ten pick… I don’t see him going to the Titans or the Giants right now… A place that makes sense to me would be the Washington Commanders,” Schefter said.
The Commanders hold the No. 7 overall pick in next month’s NFL Draft and have been linked to several different directions in recent weeks. Many mock drafts project them selecting Miami pass rusher Reuben Bain Jr., while others have connected them to Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate.
Love, however, is widely viewed as the top running back in the class and, by some evaluators, one of the best overall prospects available. If Washington were to select him in the top ten, it would continue a recent trend of running backs being taken early. Ashton Jeanty went sixth overall last year, while Bijan Robinson was selected eighth overall in 2023. Before that, Saquon Barkley was taken second overall by the New York Giants in 2018.
The Commanders’ current running back room lacks a clear, proven lead option. Jacory Croskey-Merritt is currently listed atop the depth chart, while free agent addition Rachaad White offers value as a receiving back. Jerome Ford and Jeremy McNichols round out the group, providing depth, versatility, and special teams contributions.
Given that uncertainty, adding a high-end talent like Love could make sense, whether early in the draft or through another move before training camp. Schefter’s comments won’t necessarily dictate Washington’s plans, but they highlight a scenario that could be gaining traction as the draft approaches.
