Drew Stevens has won the Washington Commanders’ kicking competition, beating out Jake Moody to become the team’s new kicker.
Stevens signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent following the 2026 NFL Draft after a standout career at Iowa. He entered training camp competing with Moody, who returned after kicking for the Commanders late last season.
According to 106.7 The Fan’s Grant Paulsen, Stevens converted 43 of 48 field goal attempts during practice and made his only preseason attempt. Moody finished 36-of-47 in practice and went 1-for-1 during the preseason, converting a 29-yard attempt that hit an upright before going through.
Stevens becomes the latest player to step into a position that has featured frequent turnover in Washington. The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala noted that Stevens is the 20th kicker signed by the Commanders since 2020, including offseason and practice-squad additions.
Assuming he kicks in the regular-season opener, Stevens will become the eighth kicker to appear in a regular-season game for Washington since 2024.
Stevens generated attention earlier this year after connecting on a 72-yard field goal in a training video. While unofficial, the kick showcased the leg strength that helped him become one of the most productive kickers in Iowa history.
He finished his college career with 352 points, the second-most in program history, while converting 76 of 95 field goal attempts and 124 of 126 extra points. His 76 field goals set an Iowa record and rank fourth in Big Ten history.
Stevens also set the school record with 12 field goals from at least 50 yards. His career-long 58-yard field goal against No. 9 Oregon in 2025 tied both the Iowa and Kinnick Stadium records. During his final season, Stevens made 22 of 28 field goal attempts, including four from beyond 50 yards, and earned third-team All-Big Ten honors from the media.
