One Body Recovered From Wreckage of Gaithersburg Condo Explosion; Police Investigating Incident as Criminal Act

Montgomery County Police and Montgomery County Fire & Rescue held a media briefing on Thursday evening to give the latest update on the Quince Orchard Blvd condo explosion that occurred on Wednesday, November 16. Notes below:

  • Around 10am this morning, K9 alerted that they had detected human remains. The excavator was moved to the front of the building to remove debris and one body was located and removed from the structure.
  • Police Chief Marcus Jones said that due to the fact a body was located, the explosion is now being treated as a criminal act and investigators are currently searching for more evidence.
  • The body has not yet been identified and has been transported to the medical examiner’s office in Baltimore. It is not clear yet if the person was a resident of the building. They are expecting an ID to be made tomorrow.
  • All agencies will be back on site tomorrow to continue the investigations. Parts of the building still needs to be searched through to verify there no other victims inside.
  • It was noted that on Dec 30th , 2017 there was a fire at nearby 880 Quince Orchard Blvd. That was an accidental electrical fire, no relation to this incident.  Residents should take comfort and rest assured in the safety of their structures and having Washington Gas as their supplier.

On Wednesday, Gaithersburg mayor Jud Ashman informed the community of where they can donate to help the families impacted by the fire at Potomac Oaks in Gaithersburg. “Any amount helps and 100% of it will go to those families.” Ashman tweeted. A November 16 fire injured multiple residents, including four children, at a condominium complex at 826 Quince Orchard Boulevard in Gaithersburg. Many people were evacuated with little or nothing and now are in temporary shelter. At the request of Montgomery County, MHP is collecting financial donations to help affected families. Per MHP: While this is not an MHP property, we maintain close ties with the community through the many affordable housing properties we have developed in Montgomery County, and are playing a role by managing financial donations to help impacted residents. Anyone interested in donating may do so at this link.
