6 Safer Alternatives to Trick-or-Treating this Year
Due to COVID-19 concerns

Montgomery County advises against traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating this year. This doesn’t mean Halloween has to be a bust. Here are six spooky socially-distanced alternatives.

1. Enjoy some virtual Halloween fun
Staying home is the most surefire way to stay healthy this Halloween, so keep an eye out for virtual costume contests and celebrations. If you’re looking for frights, join the city of Gaithersburg for a virtual walking tour of the allegedly haunted Kentlands estate or a celebration of the macabre work of Edgar Allan Poe.

2. Gaze at a rare full Moon
On October 31, a full moon will appear in all time zones for the first time since 1944! To make it even more like something out of a Halloween movie, it will be the second full moon of the month, making it a blue moon. Watch this rare sight from home, or visit the Gaithersburg Observatory for a better view.

3. Trick-or-treat, drive-thru style
Trunk-or-treating raises some of the same safety concerns as traditional trick-or-treating, but it’s not the only way to get candy from your car this year. DC Party Box is offering a drive-thru trick-or-treating event with plenty of stops to enjoy candy and frights from the safety of your car.

4. Visit a haunted trail
Those looking for Halloween thrills can walk the scary trails at Markoff’s Haunted Forest in Dickerson or Field of Screams in Olney on Halloween night. Walk in a bubble of up to six people and don’t forget your mask!

5. Or, visit a real haunted site
If you want to take your chances with some real ghosts, grab some brave friends and visit some sites in the county that are rumored to be haunted.

6. Watch a drive-in movie
Spooky season isn’t complete without some scary movies. DC party box recently added more titles and times for their drive-in theater in North Bethesda.
