Bethesda

Cubasi Bistro, a Cuban restaurant with an existing location in Sterling, VA, is coming to 4710 Bethesda Ave. The restaurant will be located on the ground level of The Seasons Apartments in the location that was formerly home to Jimmy John’s. Jimmy John’s closed that location in late 2018. We spoke with a representative from Cubasi Bistro today who told us that the restaurant hopes to open in two weeks.

The menu consists of starters like ham croquettes, empanadas, bacalitos, and more. A variety of sandwiches and sides are on the menu, as well as pork. beef, chicken, and seafood entrees. Diners can also create their own bowls that consist of chicken/beef and salad, rice, beans, plantains, and more. The full menu and photos of a few dishes can be seen below.


Crime

According to a press release from United States Attorney for the District of Maryland,  Shanta Johnson, age 44, of Germantown, Maryland, pleaded guilty yesterday to aiding in the preparation of false tax returns.  The full press release can be seen below:

The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron; Special Agent in Charge Darrell J. Waldon of the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, Washington, D.C. Field Office; and Inspector General Joseph V. Cuffari of the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Inspector General.


Business

The Center will utilize the donation for facility improvements & expansion of culturally enriching programs

Kisco Senior Living, which is currently being constructed next to Life Time in Gaithersburg, and joint venture partners Welltower® (NYSE: WELL) & SHA Capital Partners have announced a donation of $50,000 to the City of Gaithersburg’s Benjamin Gaither Center. The Center will serve residents of Gaithersburg & the surrounding community who are 55 years of age & older, will utilize the donation for facility improvements & an expansion of culturally enriching programs.


Bethesda

Hip Flask, the rooftop bar that’s inside of The Marriott Bethesda Downtown at Marriott HQ, is now open. Hip Flask serves small plates and craft cocktails and is located at 7707 Woodmont Ave in Bethesda. The new hotel also features a 360 degree lobby bar. Seventh State, the hotel’s restaurant, which includes a built-in Italian wood oven and indoor/outdoor seating opened earlier this year.

MoCo Celebs

Comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked while he was performing at a show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, according to many witnesses reports on social media and a video showing a man attempting to tackle Chappelle (seen below). According to multiple reports, the man was allegedly armed with a gun and a knife and was removed from the stage by security prior to being taken away from the stadium on a gurney.

Chapelle, who grew up in Silver Spring and attended Woodlin Elementary School before going to Duke Ellington School of the Arts in DC, appeared uninjured and continued with the show.


WMATA

Metro last week announced new safety initiatives to engage the community, target enforcement efforts and increase police visibility on buses, trains and in stations. 

Per Metro: Under the leadership of Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Anzallo, MTPD has developed a three-pillar approach to invest resources in the community: education, outreach and enforcement. This approach uses a “problem solving police strategy” focused on identifying the underlying issues that may lead to crime, developing solutions and prevention.

Emergent BioSutions released a statement last week mourning the loss of founder and former CEO and executive chairman, Fuad El-Hibri, who died peacefully at home early Saturday surrounded by family and loved ones. Per the statement:

Fuad founded Emergent (then BioPort) in 1998 with a single product, BioThrax® (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed), and took the company public in 2006. Having served as CEO for almost 14 years until March 2012, and executive chairman for 10 years until his retirement in March 2022, Fuad was instrumental in growing the company’s portfolio to its current suite of marketed and procured products for a variety of public health threats, including medical countermeasures for anthrax, smallpox, botulism, and chemical warfare agents, as well as overseeing the company’s role in fighting the opioid crisis.

Montgomery Parks will celebrate the reopening of Edith Throckmorton Neighborhood Park(opens in a new tab) on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 11 a.m. The rain date is May 14, 2022, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The celebration of the park renovation is free and open to the public and will include a brief speaking program, ribbon-cutting ceremony, and light refreshments. The park is located at 3925 Hampden Street, Kensington, MD 20895.

“The renovation of this park is remarkable. Beyond MoCo

Staff at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute are devastated and mourning the loss of 25 American flamingos and one Northern pintail duck killed by a wild fox yesterday in the Zoo’s outdoor flamingo habitat. Three additional flamingos were injured and are being treated at the Zoo’s veterinary hospital.

Per the press release: In the early morning of May 2, Bird House staff arrived to discover the deceased flamingos and sighted a fox in the Zoo’s outdoor flamingo yards. The fox escaped the yard. The flock originally had 74 flamingos. The remaining flamingos were moved indoors to their barn and the ducks to a covered, secure outdoor space.

Rocktobierfest is currently scheduled to take place at RedGate Park at 14500 Avery Road in Rockville on Saturday, October 1st from 11am-5pm.. It makes for the second major City of Rockville event to leave Rockville Town Square this year, as Taste of Rockville/Hometown Holidays will also be taking place at RedGate Park for the first time this year.

Rocktobierfest features three stages of entertainment, including German, rock and children’s music. Guests can also enjoy beverages for sale by local breweries and participants, food, and an artisan shopping area. This annual event attracts usually attracts more than 8,000 people. Last year’s Rocktobierfest was scheduled to take place in Rockville Town Square on October 2nd, but was cancelled on September 17th due to Covid concerns.
