We previously took a look at Clopper’s Mill, which was burned down by an arsonist in 1947- leaving ruins that are still visible off of Clopper Road in Germantown today. Seneca Creek was one of the main sources of power for the first 150 years of settlement in Montgomery County. Montgomery County has 44 mills

Baskin Robbins to Close Cabin John Village Location This Week; Relocate This Spring

Baskin Robbins will be closing its Cabin John Village location this week, per an employee of the store and confirmation via phone call. The store plans to locate to nearby Potomac Woods Plaza, located adjacent to Park Potomac. Potomac Woods Plaza is currently the home to Quincy’s Potomac, Brooklyn Deli, Walgreens, and more.

Black History in MoCo: Josiah Henson

Last April, Montgomery Parks opened the Josiah Henson Museum and Park, a 3.34-acre park located at 11420 Old Georgetown Road in the Luxmanor Community of North Bethesda. The museum and park is dedicated to telling the story of resilience and perseverance in overcoming slavery, based on the detailed words and experiences of Josiah Henson – enslaved in Montgomery County for much of his life.

The Josiah Henson Museum and Park tells the inspirational life story of Reverend Josiah Henson, who was born into slavery yet defied the odds to become an influential author, abolitionist, minister, public speaker, and a world-renowned figure. One of Henson’s many accomplishments was his 1849 autobiography, The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada, which inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s landmark anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

MoCo History: What Is That Building in the Woods on Clopper Road in Germantown? It’s Clopper’s Mill

If you’ve ever driven on Clopper Rd near Waring Station Rd in Germantown, you’ve likely seen the ruins of a building in the woods. That building is Clopper’s Mill, named for Francis C. Clopper, also the road’s namesake. Per the The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission:

Francis C. Clopper operated a mill on Great Seneca Creek. He expanded the existing stone mill in 1834 with bricks made at his Woodlands estate. The original mill dated from 1795, and a mill had been on site as early as the 1770s. Clopper’s Mill, now in ruins, stands near Clopper and Waring Station Roads.

Montgomery County: Aquilino Cancer Center Receives $1.5M to Support Pioneering Cancer-Care Programs

The Aquilino Cancer Center, part of Adventist HealthCare’s Shady Grove Medical Center, is the first free-standing community cancer center in Montgomery County, MD that houses all patient services under one roof. Within Aquilino, is the Bill Richards Center for Healing, named for William (Bill) Richards, PhD, a world-renowned pioneer in the treatment of the depression and anxiety that frequently accompanies a cancer diagnosis.

On February 2nd, the center announced it received two significant donations totaling $1.5MM to continue its pioneering research and innovative therapies. Long-time supporters of Shady Grove Medical Center, Mike and Amy Aquilino are among the healing center’s most ardent supporters and the force behind naming the center to honor Dr. Richards.

Metro Twitter Hacked; Obscene Tweets Now Deleted

Two of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Twitter accounts were hacked early this morning, leading to obscene tweets by someone who claimed they were fired as the social media manager for the accounts.

The hacker sent obscene and profanity laced tweets on Metro’s official Twitter page and its Metrorail page in the early morning hours Monday morning. Metro’s main account, @WMATA, was changed from “Metro” to “Blueface Da Bus.” The @metrorailinfo account was also hacked.

Montgomery County: Indoor Mask Requirement Ends Tonight at 11:59pm

Last week the Montgomery County Council, acting as the Board of Health, announced it will not be introducing a new Board of Health regulation to extend the indoor mask requirement. This allows the current Board of Health regulation to terminate tonight (Monday, February 21st) at 11:59pm.

CBS Sitcom ‘Ghosts’ Stars Two Wootton High School Graduates

The CBS sitcom ‘Ghosts’ debuted in October of last year and was recently renewed for a second season. Coincidentally, it stars two actors who graduated from Wootton High School in Rockville. The show is about a married couple in New York, Samantha and Jay, who believe that their dreams have come true when they inherit a beautiful country home. They soon find that it is falling apart and inhabited by ghosts who died on the mansion’s grounds and are now bound to the area until they can reach the afterlife. Jay cannot see or hear the ghosts, but Samantha, after having a near-death experience, can.

Jay, the male lead, is portrayed by Utkarsh Ambudkar. Ambudkar was born in nearby Baltimore, but was raised in Rockville while his parents worked at NIH in Bethesda. The 38 year old actor graduated from Wootton High School and is well known for his roles as a VJ for MTV Desi, Donald in Pitch Perfect, Rishi in the Mindy Project, Skatch in Mulan, and more. Below you’ll see Ambudkar’s rap from the 2020 Oscars.

Metro to Improve Weekday Red Line Service Beginning Next Tuesday, February 22

Metro will increase rail service on the Red Line beginning Tuesday, February 22, building on recent weekday service improvements on the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines to provide customers with more frequent and reliable service.

On weekdays, Red Line trains will operate every 10 minutes instead of every 12 minutes. Trains are operating every 20 minutes on all other lines, with trains as frequently as every seven to 10 minutes at stations that are served by multiple lines throughout the system.

Metro Service Information for Presidents Day, February 21

On Presidents Day, Monday, February 21, 2022, Metrorail will operate on a Saturday schedule and Metrobus will run Saturday supplemental service. MetroAccess customers who wish to travel on the holiday may make a reservation; however, subscription trips will be canceled.

Customers are advised to be aware of scheduled track work on the Blue and Yellow lines, closing the six stations south of Reagan National Airport. Free shuttle buses will be provided to/from the closed stations. View the weekend service advisory for additional information.

MoCo Resident-Owned Gentleman’s Club in DC Will Be First of Its Kind in the U.S. to Include Sportsbook Inside

Elys Game Technology, an interactive gaming and sports betting technology company,  earlier this week announced an agreement for The Cloakroom (“Cloakroom”) to operate a sportsbook with located at 476 K St. NW, Washington DC, 20001. The Cloakroom is a gentleman’s club that is co-owned by Montgomery County native and resident Tony Cavasilios. “I’m bringing something to our region that has not been done anywhere. This will be the first Gentleman’s club in the country that will have a sports book inside of it.” said Cavasilios.

The partnership with Cloakroom would represent the Company’s second successful execution of its strategy to offer advanced betting technology through a white label sportsbook solution in restaurant and bar venues. Elys launched its small business strategy in October 2021 with the Grand Central Restaurant and Sportsbook (“Grand Central”) in the Adams Morgan area of Washington, DC. Since then, metrics sequentially for October, November, and December have shown significant growth period-over-period for both Elys and Grand Central.
