This past summer we let you know that El Mercat Bar De Tapas would be taking over the spot that was most recently home to Gumbo Ya Ya, at 101 Gibbs Street Unit C in Rockville Town Square.

The restaurant held a ticketed preview dinner event this weekend, and will be opening for dinner service to the public tomorrow (Monday, January 23) starting at 5pm, with lunch and brunch arriving in the coming weeks.

East County

Christopher Bolton, a lifelong MoCo resident who currently resides in Fairland, has announced his candidacy for County Council in District 5 (a new district in East County that spans from White Oak to Spencerville, Burtonsville, and parts of Leisure World).

Bolton is a Democrat who served in the navy for 5 years. He joins Brian Anleu, Fatmata Barrie, William “Chip” Montier, Daniel Koroma, Kristin Mink, and Jeremiah Pope in the District 5 race.

You’ve likely seen cranes and construction the last few months next to Lifetime Fitness in Gaithersburg. The construction is for The Carnegie at Washingtonian, a Kisco Senior Living Center, that will feature a seven-story complex with 302 one and two bedroom floorpans for independent living and memory care residences.

The groundbreaking of The Carnegie at Washingtonian Center  was last October, but the work has been more visible as of late. Situated on 8.5 acres beside RIO Lakefront at Washingtonian Center, The Carnegie is set to welcome residents in the spring of 2024.


Bethesda

Alex Perdikis, principal owner of Koons Lincoln of Silver Spring, announced the expansion of his dealership holdings into downtown Bethesda with Koons Lincoln of Bethesda last month. The new dealership, housed in a multi-million-dollar state-of-the art facility will showcase Lincoln’s luxury line of SUVs in the heart of Bethesda’s newly revitalized commercial and residential district.

Slated to open in early 2022, the dealership, located at 7315 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda, will feature Lincoln Navigators, Aviators, and other models in an innovative street level storefront. In addition, vehicles will be showcased to the public in an elegantly illuminated glass runway. Designed to evoke a glass display case, the runway provides ample space for shoppers to browse Lincoln models and is an exciting exterior focal point of the Lincoln Boutique store. The dealership, designed by Bethesda-based Penney Design Group, will entice shoppers with additional amenities including a spacious modern lounge, coffee bar, private sales suites and more.

Two weeks ago, Gaithersburg-based Novavax received approval for its Covid-19 Vaccine from the South Korean food and drug administration and filed for emergency use authorization in South Africa. In late December it received emergency authorization in India, and earlier this week Novavax announced its Australian approval.

MCPS

Blake High School athletic director Jared Fribush announced the hiring of Bryon Marshall as the new variety football head coach at the school. He has been the Junior variety head coach since 2017 and will be taking over for DeShawn Anderson, who stepped down following the fall season.

Potomac

Dan Binstock is a lifelong MoCo resident. The Potomac dad is now also a viral TikTok sensation, earning over 340K followers and nearly 30 million views in less than a month with his ability to hear a song just once and recreate it to near perfection on the piano.

Binstock was born and raised in Potomac. He started playing piano at the age of 5, when he realized he had an ear for music. After taking lessons growing up and continuing to play while he was a student at Wootton High School, where he was known for his piano-playing ability, he went in a different direction with his career, earning his law degree and currently owning and operating a company that recruits lawyers.


MoCo Police

Per Montgomery County Police: A 17-year-old Magruder High School student is in custody following a shooting at the school on Friday, January 21, 2022.

At approximately 12:53 p.m., high school security became aware of a situation in one of the school bathrooms. A male Magruder High School student had been shot and 911 was called at approximately 12:57 p.m.
