Maryland

Current Maryland Comptroller and 2022 gubernatorial candidate, Peter Franchot, has called for a state of emergency to address the surging Omicron variant. The decision would have to be made by Governor Larry Hogan.

Franchot, a Montgomery County resident, is the 33rd Comptroller of Maryland. A member of the Democratic Party, Franchot served for 20 years in the Maryland House of Delegates representing Takoma Park and Silver Spring. He was elected comptroller in 2006, and has subsequently been re-elected three times. Franchot confirmed in January 2020 that he will run for governor of Maryland in 2022.


Silver Spring

Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones briefed the media regarding a man who was shot and killed by police after firing at them during a traffic stop.

According to Jones, officers conducted a traffic stop near Wayne Ave and Dartmouth St on a white Mercedes Benz that was suspected to have been involved in a shooting that occurred around 4am this morning on Bonifant St.


MCFRS

The condos at Plymouth Woods, 872 College Parkway near Nelson Street Rockville, were evacuated on Tuesday morning after an underground water main break led to flooding in the garden style condos.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue was onnthe scene soon after being alerted and helped with the evacuation process, which required buses for transport to temporary shelter, according to MCFRS PIO Pete Piringer.

A Frederick County Press Release from earlier today, announcing a meeting of Frederick County Board of Health, on Thursday, December 30 can be seen below.

FREDERICK, MD — The Frederick County Board of Health will meet in an emergency meeting on Thursday, December 30 at 7pm. This meeting is called to discuss current level of risk, an indoor mask requirement, and a limit on public events over 25 people.


MoCo Celebs

Issa Rae was born in Los Angeles. After moving to Senegal for a couple years where her father, a pediatrician,  attempted to open a hospital, her family moved to Potomac, Maryland.

While growing up in Potomac, she was in a gifted and talented program at Cold Spring Elementary School. Rae was quoted as saying that in her time in Potomac, she grew up with “things that aren’t considered ‘Black,’ like the swim team and street hockey and Passover dinners with Jewish best friends.”

Gaithersburg’s Novavax has received emergency use authorization in India just one week after the European Union authorized the use of Novavax Inc.’s Covid-19 vaccine for adults.

In an early December meeting, the City of Gaithersburg unanimously approved Novavax’s development plan.


Takoma Park

A $1 million Powerball ticket was sold in Montgomery County for the drawing held on Monday, December 20th. Per Maryland Lottery, the ticket was sold at New Hampshire Sunoco, 6360 New Hampshire Avenue, Takoma Park and remains unclaimed as of Dec. 27.

Earlier this week, National Convenience Distributors, LLC announced the acquisition of Century Distributors Inc., one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s largest full-line wholesale distributors to the convenience and grocery store industries. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Century Distributors, founded in 1976 and located in Rockville, Maryland, will join NCD as a newly created division. Currently, National Convenience Distributors is the 4th largest wholesale convenience distributor in the U.S., servicing 12 states along the I-95 corridor, with annual revenues in excess of $3 billion.

Per VLP Therapeutics:

Gaithersburg, MD — US-based biotech company VLP Therapeutics, Inc. (VLPT) announced on December 27 that it has signed an agreement for an investment of US$21 million in a Series A-1 round from six investors, consisting of two new investors: Nobelpharma Co., Ltd.and MUFG Bank, Ltd., and four existing investors: Sojitz Corporation, MIYAKO Capital Co., Ltd., Mr. Robert G. Hisaoka and SK Impact Fund, LLC.
