Beyond MoCo

We learned today that Mazza Gallerie in Friendship Heights has been put up for auction as a foreclosure. As first reported by the Washington Business Journal and Bisnow Washington, the owner of the property estimates to have lost around $533 million in revenue due to the current COVID crisis.

Mazza Gallerie, located in Friendship Heights, is technically on the Washington, DC side of town. Currently, the stores in the mall include Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, TJ Maxx, and an AMC movie theatre– most of which are temporarily closed at the moment.  Back in May, Neiman Marcus announced bankruptcy; there is speculation that this is a contributing factor to the current sale of the mall.

Downtown Silver Spring

Urban Butcher has decided to “hit the pause button” according to a social media post made earlier today. The Downtown Silver Spring restaurant opened in 2013 and featured house-aged beef and craft charcuterie. When asked if this means the restaurant is permanently closing, Urban Butcher responded with “No, it means unfortunately we are closed for the time being, but we will keep you guys updated. Please keep supporting us by stopping by at El Sapo, where we have a wonderful outdoor space and delicious Mojitos. Thank you!”

The social media post announcing the pause can be seen below: “Dear friends, Due to the current situation, we have decided to hit “The Pause Button” and bunch up at @elsaposocial (Urban Butcher’s younger brother).
