A water main break on Washingtonian Blvd. in Rio closed the road in one direction earlier today.
Guess has closed in Montgomery Mall. According to the signage, It’ll be replaced by Altar’d State (a faith based clothing chain with many locations in the south and Midwest).
It looks like the shopping center’s addition of Trader Joe’s later this year is helping bring some solid names into the fold.
According to the Maryland Department of Labor, Sears in Montgomery Mall is scheduled to close on March 18th of this year.
The Montgomery Mall location is listed with a ‘1’ Type Code, which means “plant closure.”
It will be replaced by Anthropologie, a clothing store that sells boho-chic womenswear, shoes, accessories, wedding attire, and home decor. Anthropologie plans to open this Fall.

I asked to speak with management and was transferred over. After a 5 minute wait, I spoke with a manager that told me the Gaithersburg location will not be closing.
Many of the stores that closed recently did so without informing their employees, so it’s still possible that the Gaithersburg location doesn’t make it, but for now…they’re staying put. At least according to management.
This was expected, as construction was scheduled to start January 1st, but the closing date was previously unsure. Kimco Realty announced that they’ll be renovating the theatre to make room for Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas, creating a walkway from where Persians Gallery is now, through the building to Market Street.
A few interesting upgrades that’ll be included in the revitalization:
“Today I am announcing plans for a new Discovery global real estate strategy and footprint.
Chief among these changes, we have made the decision to move our global headquarters to New York City. We have therefore made the difficult decision to reduce our footprint in Maryland over time, with the ultimate closure and sale of our One Discovery Place headquarters building in Silver Spring, expected in 2019.”
