Following the Montgomery Planning Board’s approval of The Great Seneca Plan: Connecting Life and Science last month, the plan has been transmitted to the Montgomery County Council, which will hold a public hearing on the Planning Board Draft of the plan on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 7 p.m.

Education

During the Maryland History Day Contest held earlier this month, several MCPS students from middle and high schools advanced to the National History Day competition set for June 9-13. More than 350 students from 35 MCPS middle schools and five high schools took part in the Montgomery County History Day competition last week at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School. More than 120 people volunteered as judges to interview and score the students’ projects. The students advancing are:

Maryland

MCPS will be piloting girls’ flag football at all 25 high schools during the upcoming Fall 2024 season, through a partnership with the Baltimore Ravens and Under Armour. MCPS and the Ravens will be hosting skills clinics for interested students June 4-6. Please note the following:

Crime

Updated to include the fundraiser for D’Andre Wint

The Community is rallying around the family of Quincy Johnson of Takoma Park and D’Andre Wint of Laurel man who were shot and killed in a double homicide that occurred on Sunday, May 26, 2024 near Nolte Local Park in Silver Spring.


Montgomery Planning

The Montgomery County Planning Board approved the Eastern Silver Spring Communities Plan Scope of Work at its May 16 meeting. The Scope of Work lays out the Montgomery County Planning Department‘s approach to developing land use recommendations for areas in eastern Silver Spring that address how properties and buildings are used today, zoning, transportation, housing, schools, parks, urban design, environmental resilience, historic preservation, community identity and character, community facilities, and infrastructure.

Education

Carla Glawe has been the principal of Olney Elementary School, since 2011. She took over following the retirement of Joan O’Brien who was the school’s principal for 19 years. Prior to coming to Olney Elementary School, Glawe served as principal intern and acting principal at Stonegate Elementary School where she began her teaching career in 1997 as a first-grade teacher. While in MCPS, she has also spent three years as a consulting teacher, working with new and under-performing teachers in the county, and then as an assistant principal at Harmony Hills Elementary School before returning to Stonegate. The school also has a rich history, which is shared on the school website and can be seen below:
