Gaithersburg

The City of Gaithersburg was awarded $1,000,000 in direct federal funding for the Russell Avenue Multimodal and Streetscape Improvements project. Funds will update Russell Avenue to better connect Olde Towne Gaithersburg with new mixed-use development, accommodate a future Flash Bus Rapid Transit Route and expanded county transit center, and create a park boulevard to spur economic activity between Odendhal and Montgomery Village Avenues.

$37 million first phase of the Westbard Square redevelopment project has signed new tenants with a few businesses already open in the 23-acre project at Westbard Ave. and Ridgefield Rd. Overall, the development will include 148,000SF of retail as well as Kensington Senior Living– a 116-unit assisted living facility that is currently under construction.

The City of Alexandria has ended negotiations related to the Potomac Yard Entertainment District opportunity that would’ve included the Capitals and Wizards, stating that the proposal will not move forward, according to a press release by the City of Alexandria on Wednesday.


Bethesda

In February we let you know that Mon Ami Gabi Bethesda is set to undergo an extensive remodel this spring that will temporarily close the restaurant that has been a part of the community since 2002. Earlier this month, a $1.2 million permit was issued for the job.

DMV

The K Street entrance of the Farragut North station is back open two weeks ahead of schedule. The entrance now has three brand-new, more reliable escalators and a repaired support beam. Additional stations will have escalators replaced this year (available below).

Beyond MoCo

Carnival Cruise Line said on Tuesday that while rescue and remediation efforts continue in Baltimore Harbor following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, it will temporarily move Carnival Legend’s Baltimore operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

Business

The retail portion of Upper Rock on Shady Grove Rd. in Rockville, across from Best Buy and Home Depot, has been sold. The retail property was sold by New York-based Zurick Alternative Asset Management, who acquired the property in late 2017, to an affiliate of the Friedkin Property Group for $14.15 million (as reported by Maryland Newsletters).
