Flags for Our Heroes, featuring a giant display of American flags, returns to the lawn at Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm, Friday, May 26 through Monday, May 29. The flag display, which is lit at night, can be enjoyed 24 hours a day. A formal opening ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 27 at 11 a.m. There will be a flag retirement ceremony on Sunday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m.

Flags For Our Heroes is a celebration of the people who have shaped us and inspired us. Each Memorial Day weekend since 2014, Gaithersburg’s Bohrer Park is transformed into a Field of Honor where 750 8-foot-high American flags are flown to celebrate our heroes. Each flag honors a person who has made a difference in someone’s life

Wegmans Pasta Sauce Sold in Maryland Stores Recalled Due to Allergy Alert

LiDestri Foods is recalling 24-ounce jars of Wegman’s Italian Classics Diavolo pasta sauce, because it may contain undeclared fish (anchovy). People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to anchovy run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. The Diavolo pasta sauce was sold at Wegman’s grocery stores in Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia between April 3, 2023 and May 16, 2023.

The product can be identified as a mason jar with red pasta sauce, called Diavolo. The only expiration date affected is March 31, 2025, with the code F0589:

MCPS Records New Pregame Announcements to Include Spanish Version

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has decided to re-record the pregame announcements after its initial recording fifteen years ago with an added Spanish version. Having been only updated once before, in 2021, the pregame announcements have been an integral part of MCPS. The announcements serve as a way for both the athletes and spectators to know how to conduct themselves at games and to remind everyone that they are there to support and respect the athletes and officials.

Woman Arrested, Charged With 2nd Degree Murder, For Crash That Killed Three in March

The United States Park Police arrested the driver involved in the fatal March 15 crash on Rock Creek Parkway that killed three occupants, including a Montgomery County resident, in one of the involved cars. Nakita Marie Walker, 43, of Washington, D.C. was charged with Second Degree Murder and arrested on May 22.

Per Park Police, On Wednesday, March 15 at 1:43 a.m., USPP officers were dispatched to a crash on the Rock Creek Parkway near P Street NW. The three occupants in the Honda were pronounced dead on the scene. The deceased were later identified as Mohamed Kamara, 42, of Burtonsville, MD, Jonathan Cabrera Mendez, 23, of Arlington, VA, and Olvin Torres Velasquez, 22, of Arlington, VA.

Metro Seeks Customer Feedback at Exhibit on Train Fleet of the Future

Per WMATA: With the design of Metro’s train fleet of the future underway, customers are invited to visit a pop-up exhibit at Gallery Place – Chinatown Metro Station to view current concepts and provide input on the look, layout, and features of trains. The fleet of the future is expected to start serving customers in 2026. The pop-up will feature physical samples, renderings, and videos allowing the public to interact with and provide feedback on the design of the new trains.

Located at Gallery Place – Chinatown Station at the 7th and F St. entrance near the faregates, the exhibit will be open at designated times tomorrow, May 23, through May 30. Fox 5’s Zip Trip To Kick-Off 2023 Season in Pike & Rose

Fox 5 will kick off its 2023 Zip Trip season in Pike & Rose this upcoming Friday. Last year, FOX 5 visited 15 cities across our region of the country that we call home through their Zip Trip series. FOX 5 Zip Trip is a weekly Friday series that highlights the best spots to visit around the D.C. region area that includes on-air personalities and crew who will broadcast live from the properties to highlight the local businesses and community.

In 2023, Fox 5 will continue that by visiting 15 more cities, starting with MoCo’s very own Pike & Rose this Friday, May 26th. At each stop, they plan to “show you the incredible people and places that make the DMV special all summer long. From must-stop locations, to tasty restaurants – to compelling community members, you won’t want to miss a minute!” The Zip Trip events start early, usually around 6am, and last throughout the morning. Fox 5 Zip Trip will return to MoCo, in Germantown, on August 4th.

Statement from the Montgomery County Board of Education on FY2024 Operating Budget: “The Board of Education thanks the Montgomery County Council for their ongoing support of Montgomery County Public Schools’ students, families, and staff. We are appreciative of both how hard you worked to reach a decision and your commitment to compensating our teachers, administrators and staff who support our students each and every day. We are a community united in support of our public school system and the Board applauds the County Council’s recent action on the recordation tax, which will help fund school construction.

Luther Reynolds, Charleston Chief of Police Who Also Served Montgomery County For 29 Years, Dies at 56

Charleston Police Chief Luther T. Reynolds passed away on Monday, following a battle with cancer. Reynolds was 56 years old. He was appointed Chief of Police of the Charleston Police Department on April 16, 2018, following 29 years of professional law enforcement experience serving the residents of Montgomery County, Maryland. He is survived by his wife, Caroline, and children, Luke and Grace.

Chief Reynolds was previously an Assistant Chief of Police for the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland since 2013. He has worked for the Montgomery County Police Department since 1988 and held the ranks of Patrol Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Assistant Chief. He served as Captain/Station Commander in the 2nd District, Captain/Director of the Personnel Division, Captain/Director of the Training and Education Division, Captain/Commander of the Special Operations Division, Captain/Station Commander, Assistant Chief of the Administrative Bureau, and Assistant Chief of the Patrol Bureau.

Wheaton High School Hosts Unified Field Day in Honor of Sarah Gilbert on Tuesday, May 23; Einstein, Kennedy, and Springbrook Will Also Participate In The Event

After the unexpected passing of Wheaton High School LFI student Sarah Gilbert, the school wanted to honor her and her memory by having general ed students, SCB, and LFI students all working together for inclusion in their Unified Field Day event that will take place on Tuesday, May 23. Sarah is fondly remembered as always wanting to be included in every activity and every conversation.

In 2019, Wheaton High School staff wanted to have an event to showcase School Community Based (SBC) and Learning For Independence (LFI) students’ talents in a way that would bring the community together. Planning took place, however the pandemic came and shut everything down. Now, a few years later, nearby schools Springbrook, Kennedy, and Einstein have enthusiastically accepted Wheaton’s invitation to join in the excitement! For the past 6 weeks, students from leadership classes have been working with and coaching students in the SCB and LFI programs with their events.

MCPS Graduation Ceremonies Kick Off May 31, Will Feature Many Notable Speakers

Nearly 12,000 Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students are expected to receive their diplomas during commencement ceremonies scheduled between Wednesday, May 31, and Thursday, June 15. Graduation ceremonies will take place on individual high school campuses, at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., and on the campuses of Mount St. Mary’s University and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

On May 31, the first seniors to cross the stage will be Poolesville High School, who will graduate at Mount St. Mary’s, and Thomas S. Wootton High School, who will graduate at DAR.
