Per MCPS: The results are in! Sami Saeed, a junior at Richard Montgomery High School, has been elected the Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) for the 2023-2024 school year. Mr. Saeed’s term begins on July 1, 2023.

All secondary students were eligible to vote in the SMOB election and 55,598 students cast ballots. Mr. Saeed received 70 percent of the vote, while his opponent, Mr. Yoseph Zerihun, a junior at Springbrook High School, received 30 percent. The SMOB election was held on April 19, 2023 through an electronic ballot that all students received in their MCPS email and were encouraged to vote through a class lesson.


Crime

Per Takoma Park Police: On April 18 at approximately 4:45 pm, Montgomery County Police called out for a carjacking that had just occurred in Silver Spring; the vehicle was heading into the City of Takoma Park.  At 5:45 pm, Takoma Park officers observed the carjacked vehicle in the 8100 block of Carroll Avenue but lost visual at New Hampshire Avenue and Merrimac Drive.  A few minutes later, the carjacked vehicle was located in the 6300 block of New Hampshire Avenue.  As officers approached the vehicle, three suspects bailed out and tried to flee on foot.  All three suspects were apprehended.  The three suspects were juveniles who were released to the custody of a parent/guardian.  Charges are pending in Montgomery County and Takoma Park.

Maryland

With the labor force participation rate at 62.6%, one of the lowest rates in decades, WalletHub today released its report on 2023’s States Where Employers Are Struggling the Most in Hiring, with Maryland coming in at #8 when it comes to “employees struggling the most in hiring.”

In order to see where employers are struggling the most in hiring, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on the rate of job openings for both the latest month and the last 12 months. Maryland Hiring Struggle Stats:


Maryland

Montgomery Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, received $5.495 million in capital funding for 13 projects from the state of Maryland during the 2023 legislative session. The funding will be used towards park projects in six legislative districts in Montgomery County that include trail and bridge projects, playground and athletic field improvements, sports court and skatepark amenities, community garden and picnic facilities, environmental restoration, and ADA enhancements.   

“Once again, we appreciate the support of the Montgomery County delegation and the entire Maryland General Assembly. These grants will help us deliver needed projects across the county for all our residents to enjoy,” said Mike Riley, director of Montgomery Parks. Capital grant-funded projects for FY 23 include: 


Gaithersburg

The City of Gaithersburg celebrates & honors Asian American & Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May with programs and a proclamation highlighting the culture, heritage & achievements of our Asian American & Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander neighbors.

Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Americans are part of the rich tapestry of American life in both our country and the City of Gaithersburg. Nineteen percent of the City’s population is of Asian & Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander heritage and can trace their ancestry to 47 countries & territories including China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Afghanistan, India, and Armenia.


Bethesda

Eater DC recently looked at places around DC where people can get crabs to enjoy at home. While there are several places in MoCo to get your crabs, two places in MoCo have made Eater DC’s list:

Bethesda Crab House (4958 Bethesda Ave, Bethesda, MD 20814): “Bethesda Crab House was opened in 1961 by Henry Vechery. Ever since it has been a local tradition. We offer oysters, shrimp, crabcakes, Alaskan King and Snow Crab legs, but our specialty is the Maryland Blue Crab.”


Takoma Park

Takoma Park police is searching for Jasmine Nicholls-Davis, an 18-year-old woman who has been missing since Wednesday, April 12th at approximately 8:20am. She was last seen at the Unit Block of University Blvd in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Restaurants

Nosh Grill House, located at 12 N Washington Street in Rockville, is holding its soft opening this week. The restaurant, which offers contemporary Chinese-style bbq, is the neighbor and sister restaurant of East Grill Karaoke and East Dumpling House. Along with all-you-can-eat bbq, Nosh Grill House offers karaoke. The soft opening began on Monday, April 17th and runs Monday-Thursday from 5pm until 1am and Friday-Sunday from 5pm-2am. Gaithersburg

Per the City of Gaithersburg: WalletHub has named Gaithersburg the #1 Most Diverse City in America with a total score of 73.09. The City also ranked #1 in the Small City category, which includes communities with populations under 100,000. The study compared more than 500 of the largest cities in the U.S. and ranked them based on socioeconomic, cultural, economic, household, and religious diversity.

A previous WalletHub ranking from February, 2023 had Gaithersburg as the second most diverse small city and the third most culturally diverse city overall based on three key indicators of ethnic diversity, including ethnicity and race, language, and birthplace.
