Gaithersburg

Duck Donuts has closed its Gaithersburg location after operating for just over five years. This morning we were informed by reader Emily Siok that the store was closed with everything (including store hours, etc.) removed form the door. While a direct link to the Gaithersburg store is still available on the Duck Donuts website, it no longer shows up in location searches within the website. A call to the Rockville location confirmed that the store has closed permanently.

Duck Donuts opened in April 2017 at 511 Quince Orchard Rd in Gaithersburg. It was the second Montgomery County location, opening a little more than a year after the Rockville location opened in early 2016 at 1327 Rockville Pike. We are told there are no plans to close the Rockville location.

Briana has worked in luxury retail for nearly 10 years, first starting in corporate but soon transitioning back to the intimate small-business setting that she missed most. Briana’s passion for childrenswear grew long before her professional career began. Her family owned several luxury children’s clothing boutiques and a children’s shoe store throughout the DMV. She regularly visited all stores, helping out on weekends and developing back of house skills from a very young age. Briana resides in the area with her family and their sweet Cavapoo, Rue!

Maddie has worked with small businesses locally and nationwide as a Marketing and PR Director. With her extensive knowledge in ecommerce, advertising, social media strategy and more, she has aided in such companies’ exponential growth. On a personal note, Maddie is familiar with the hard work it takes to run a successful small business as her husband is a fourth generation jeweler, with a store in Potomac, Maryland. Together they reside in the Lakelands community with their rescue dog, Moo, and their two young daughters, Rosie and Lucy.

Education

After seeing a similar Facebook group in Frederick County reach over 3,000 members, MCPS teachers Jennifer Wilson and Kate Stone decided to create a Montgomery County version that allows community members to “adopt” an MCPS teacher and support them buy purchasing items for the teacher off of the teacher’s Amazon wishlist. “People have always want to donate to teachers, so we just wanted to make it easier for them to be able to do it.” Wilson told us. In less than three days, the Facebook group has over 1,000 members with hundreds of gifts already donated to local teachers.

Here’s how it works: Teachers create and share their public wishlist in a post, making sure to include the wishlist link in a post. Teachers are encouraged to include information about themselves and the school they teach at. Community members then have the option to purchase one or more items from any wishlist they choose to support. Community members are encouraged to let the teacher know they purchased something from the wishlist. If they choose to, multiple people can adopt one teacher and one person can adopt multiple teachers. Everyone is encouraged to be nice to each other.

Aspen Hill

Floor & Decor is taking over the location that was home to Kmart at 14014 Connecticut Avenue in Aspen Hill. The Atlanta-based company put temporary signage up at the location earlier this week that has since been removed. We stopped by on Friday morning and workers inside confirmed that Floor & Decor is moving in.

Floor & Decor was founded in 2000 and has an existing Montgomery County location at 18501 N Frederick Ave, formerly Great Beginnings and Hechinger, in Gaithersburg. There are no current plans to close that location. The Aspen Hill Kmart location was the retailer’s last remaining Maryland location. An opening date for Floor & Decor is not available, as plenty of work is left to be done inside.

Potomac

Colony Grill, a popular Connecticut Pizza restaurant offering “bar pies”, is expanding into Maryland with its upcoming location at Cabin John Village in Potomac. Just under two years ago, the New England-style hot oil bar pizza spot opened a nearby location in Arlington (2800 Clarendon Blvd). We are told the menu is simple- Drinks on one side and pizza/toppings on the other. Pizzas range from $10.50 to $13.50, according to the Arlington location’s menu.

According to a Store Reporter report, Colony Grill will have:
