Kmart to Close its Last MoCo/Maryland Location, Closing Sales Begin

by MCS Staff

UPDATED on 2/8 to reflect liquidation sale has started.

Kmart announced that the Silver Spring (Aspen Hill location) will be closing permanently. This is last remaining Maryland location for the discount big box department store that started in 1899 as S.S. Kresge Corporation (first store named Kmart opened in 1962 and the company was renamed Kmart Corporation in 1977).

Kmart closed its other MoCo location, in the Kentlands neighborhood in Gaithersburg, back in September 2017.

Their message to customers can be seen below:

“We were gearing up to bring you another season of Kmart fun, but unfortunately that was not in the cards for us this go around.

We love sharing our store with you, but this post comes with a heavy heart—It was announced today that we will be closing our doors mid-April.

A liquidation sale began on Friday, with items marked up to 70% off. Even new arrivals for Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day are marked 30% off.

“I’d be remiss to not give a wholehearted thank you to our loyal Kmart shoppers and my dedicated store team. We’ve had a lot of fun times and built an awesome community! That’s something to celebrate.

And thank you to our online Kmart family (near and far) for sharing your memories and support for this iconic brand via our Facebook page.

We hope you get the chance to come see us again 👋🏻

💙Store management + Team #4399”

Sorry to see you go. I started shopping with my mom at Kresge’s back in the 60’s and continued with Kmart when they opened. That’s a very long time. We will miss staff we have come to know over the years especially at the Pharmacy. My family and I would like to say Thank You for your service all these years and Good luck and well wishes to each and every one of you

Going to miss this Kmart where I got my first job and has been a staple in the community for so long. It helped me as a single mother provide clothes and Christmas gifts for my son for a long time. It will be missed.

I will really miss Kmart. I remember when the one on Sargent Rd in Hyattsville, Md closed – I was disappointed. Kmart was one of very few stores now, with great value plus quality items that still have lay-a-way, which came in hand for Christmas. Hope you’ll continue saling items via internet. You will truly be missed.
