Bethesda Man Arrested in an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun) Offense at Good Guys Adult Entertainment Club in DC

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Second District announce an arrest has been made in reference to an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun) offense that occurred on Sunday, April 10, 2022, in the 2300 block of Wisconsin Avenue, Northwest.

Per MPD: At approximately 11:00 pm, the suspects entered an establishment at the listed location. One of the suspects was involved in a verbal altercation with a patron of the establishment when an employee intervened. The suspects and employee exited the establishment when one of the suspects brandished a handgun. The suspect pointed the handgun in the direction of the employee. The suspects then fled the scene.

Montgomery County now represented for first time in Maryland VLT Program; MCEDC given an initial allocation of $1.5 million in state funding

Per The Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC): MCEDC was named last week as the ninth and newest fund manager in the Maryland Small, Minority and Women-Owned Business Program, also known as the Video Lottery Terminal (VLT) Program. There are currently eight VLT fund managers around Maryland that receive state funds to provide loans for small, minority and women-owned companies.

10. Dogfish Head Alehouse (800 W Diamond Ave, Gaithersburg, MD): With a 4 out of 5 rating after 630 reviews, Dogfish Head Alehouse comes in #10 overall in the county and #2 in Gaithersburg. The restaurant recently closed its Falls Church location and announced that it has donated over $1,000,000 to charity in the last 17 years. Dogfish is listed in the American, Bar, and Pub categories.

Poolesville High School Breaks Ground For Modernization/Expansion and More Good News Out of MCPS

Poolesville High School held a ceremonial groundbreaking for its modernization and expansion currently underway. Poolesville is adding 160,000 square feet and renovating 60,000 square feet of the existing school. When completed in December 2024, the school, which currently has 1,274 students, will be able to house 1,500 students.

On June 2, Gaithersburg Middle School hosted the second annual joint Model UN Conference with Silver Spring International Middle School. Ninety students participated in the one-day event. The four committee sessions, run by seventh and eighth graders, debated climate change and press freedom. This was the first in-person middle school Model UN conference at an MCPS school. The program is in its seventh year and taught by Julie Sanders.

Seneca Valley High School Achieves LEED Silver Certification

At more than 439,000 square feet, Seneca Valley High School is the largest MCPS project to have achieved certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED rating system, the most widely used green building rating system in the world. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Points are assessed during project design and after construction to achieve a final rating of Certified, Silver or Gold. With Seneca Valley’s Silver certification, the total number of MCPS schools with LEED certification is 37.

“Seneca Valley High School students and families prioritized environmental consciousness throughout the design process for their new building, noting that we must all play our role in ensuring a safe and sustainable future for our children and our community,” said Dr. Marc Cohen, principal at Seneca Valley.

The Board of Education approved the following administrative appointments at its June 7 business meeting:

Lisa J. Bain, school secretary at Lakelands Park Middle School, died on May 25. She was 54 years old and had been with MCPS for more than 13 years.

Trial for Attempted Murder Stemming From Magruder High School Shooting Scheduled for February

On May 26th Judge David Boynton ruled defendant, Steven Alston, will be tried as an adult in the trial where the 17-year-old is facing attempted first-degree murder and other charges for the shooting inside Magruder High School on January 21^st, 2022 that wounded a fellow student, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office. On Friday, Caitlyn Peetz reported that during a hearing in Montgomery County Circuit Court on Friday, Judge James Bonifant scheduled the trial to begin Feb. 27, with it expected to last through March 10.

Alston faces more than 100 years in prison if convicted. According to charging documents, “Alston advised he took the handgun to school because he was worried he was going to get jumped.” Alston was apprehended in a classroom in school after the incident took place and while the school was in lockdown. A privately manufactured firearm (ghost gun) was found nearby inside the school, which is believed to be the gun used by Alston. Police Chief Marcus Jones noted at a press conference that there were several students in the bathroom at the time of the shooting, and nobody called 9-1-1.

Greene Turtle Germantown Replacement Will Be Four Seas Restaurant

The restaurant that will be opening in the space that was formerly home to Greene Turtle at 19961 Century Blvd in Germantown will be called Four Seas Restaurant.

We received confirmation of the permanent closure of Greene turtle in Germantown back in the summer of 2020. Since then, the building was available for sale and ended up settling back on December 17th, 2021 for $3 million. Jim McGinnis, of Restaurant Brokers & Developers, represented the sale of the building (19961 Century Blvd in Germantown), the former home of the Greene Turtle.

Third Quarter Updates of Climate Action Plan Implementation Include Progress on More Than 70 Recommendations

Montgomery County has released the third-quarter updates of its Fiscal Year 2022 Climate Work Plan that highlights the progress to implement actions in the County’s Climate Action Plan. The County has continued to make progress on more than 70 actions to help reach the goals of the plan.

The Climate Action Plan (CAP), unveiled in 2021, is a strategic plan to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80 percent by 2027 and 100 percent by 2035. The plan also seeks to reduce climate-related risks to the County’s residents, businesses and the built and natural environment. The annual climate work plan describes the actions that the County is making progress on in the near term in support of the CAP.

Free Electric Scooter Training and Safety Clinic for Those 18-and-Older Will Be Available on Saturday, June 11, in Rockville

Residents 18-and-older who are interested in electric scooter lessons will have the opportunity to attend free clinics on Saturdays, June 4 and 11, sponsored by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT). Participants can take a test ride, learn safety tips and get details on basic scooter laws.

Participants must have a valid driver’s license. No registration is required to attend a clinic and walk ups are welcome. The clinics generally will last about two hours and e-scooters will be available at each site.
