Two Story Chimney Ciderworks Plans to Open Tasting Room in August

You might have seen cider from Two Story Chimney at the Silver Spring, Bethesda, or Olney farmers markets– they’ve been making and selling their cider since 2019. Although a specific date has not been confirmed yet, they shared with us that they are planning to open a tasting room this August. The tasting room will be in the Agricultural Reserve between Damascus and Laytonsville.

Two Story Chimney’s name comes from the historic property that the cidery is built on. Although there is an apple orchard on the premises now, this land was originally used as a tobacco farm. There was a two story tobacco barn (built in 1847) that had a chimney with one hearth on each floor. The tobacco barn itself is long gone, but the two hearths are still standing on their own.

The two story chimney is not the only historic part of the property– there are two apple trees from the early 1900s that are still growing. Two Story Chimney makes their cider using a combination of fruits from grafts from these historic apple trees, fruits from modern trees grown on site, as well as from fruits grown in other local orchards.

Recently, Governor Hogan and his staff made a visit to Two Story Chimney.

New Winery, Wine Education Center, and Event Space Planned for Poolesville

Crossvines, a new development project in Poolesville, will be a combination of a winery, events center, and wine education center.

As part of a partnership with The University of Maryland Extension, students will be able to study grape cultivation, vineyard management, and winemaking at the new facility. Additionally, there will be a partnership with the Universities at Shady Grove to provide hands-on experiences for students in their agri-tourism, marketing, culinary arts, and other related programs.

The facility will share land with the Poolesville Golf Course– it’ll be built on an empty spot not currently used for golfing.  At the moment, there is a very small vineyard on the premises, which has been used for research. In addition to the vineyard, the plan is to construct a 16,500 square foot clubhouse with a banquet and dining hall, a grape crushing facility, a malting and distilling facility, educational pavilion, picnic area, and outdoor class space.

This winery is a collaboration between the Montgomery County Revenue Authority, The Universities at Shady Grove, and The University of Maryland Extension. It’s expected to bring in approximately $22 million in activity to MoCo.

Belward Farm to Become Johns Hopkins Medical Office & Surgery Center

For a long time, there was a debate over what should happen with the Belward Farm property, located at the intersection of Muddy Branch and Darnestown Road.  It appears that we finally have an answer.  Recently, development application signs labeled “Johns Hopkins Medical Office & Surgery Center” were placed along the edges of the Belward Farm property.

Some history about the area: The Belward property was owned by Elizabeth Beall Banks, a Montgomery County teacher and farmer.  In the 80s, Banks sold the land to Johns Hopkins University.  Her vision was to provide this land to the University so they could build a research campus for finding cancer cures.

A couple of years after her death, these plans changed. More recent proposals were created that would turn the area into a $10 billion “Science City” with 13 story office buildings.  The campus was slated to hold around 50,000 workers.  Banks’ family members and local community members felt that this change was a huge change from the spirit of the donation and fought to scale back the development plans.

As of right now, there are only immediate plans for one new building. There is a possibility that up to 12 additional buildings might be constructed in the future, but the formerly proposed “Science City” does not seem to be in the works any longer.

Per the Montgomery County Planning Board documents, the farmhouse and outbuilding have been deemed historic and will remain on the property.

The current plan is that groundbreaking will happen in 2022 with construction ending in 2023.

The planning documents can be found here

MoCo Now Has a Mister Softee Truck, Just in Time for Summer

We learned recently that a Mister Softee truck is now traveling through the streets of MoCo.

Mister Softee is best known for their sundaes, cones, milkshakes, and cartwheels (ice cream sandwiches). They are also well known for their jingle, which they play aloud from their trucks.

The Mister Softee website shares that they are “the largest franchiser of soft ice cream trucks” in the US. They got their start in Philadelphia and now have over 625 trucks in 18 states.

Prior to the opening of the MoCo truck, the closest Mister Softees could be found on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Richmond, VA.

The MoCoShow’s founder, Alex T., remembers there was a Mister Softee in the area when he was growing up, but MoCo has been without one for many years.

You can learn more about MoCo’s Mister Softee here.

The Top 10 North Bethesda/Rockville Restaurants According to Our Writer @Pike.and.rozay

While there may be some debate over what to call the area surrounding Pike & Rose, our writer pike.and.rozay feels that there is no debate over which are her favorite restaurants in that area!

Check out her thoughts on the best local (non-chain) restaurants in the North Bethesda/ Rockville neighborhood and let us know below if you agree with her!

Patate pizza at Ema Rossi

10. Ema Rossi (in Rock Creek Village Center off of Norbeck Rd)— All of their pizzas have a unique and thoughtful combo of toppings, there’s something for everyone here! One of the things that makes this place so special is how genuinely excited all the staff are about the food that they make. If you love learning about how everything is made, this is the place for you. My favorite dishes: Di Mare pasta and Patate- Pizza with roasted potato, mortadella, mozzarella, herb ricotta, pistachios.

Kanom Jeeb at Bangkok Garden in Rockville

9. Bangkok Garden (In Wintergreen Plaza off of 355)—  Delicious Thai street food! Every bite is full of flavor, I’ve never had anything mediocre there. They also offer a “secret Thai” menu with dishes such as Koi (raw beef salad) and Gang Som Cha Oom– described as “Thai Style Sour Curry with fried eggs infused with Acacia Leaves and Shrimp”. My favorite dishes– Drunken fried rice, Kanom Jeeb— pork and crabmeat dumplings

Salmon with toasted Quinoa from Owen’s Ordinary

8. Owen’s Ordinary (in Pike & Rose)— Way more than your average biergarten. They offer traditional bar bites like nachos and wings, but their new chef has created some really craveable seasonal specials too! Love their outdoor dining area as well.  My favorite items– Bacon wrapped dates, Salmon with quinoa.

Cajun Seafood Banh Mi from Anh-Mazing Viet Kitchen at The Block

7. The Block (in Pike & Rose) — Technically a food hall made of several amazing restaurants (Little Miner Taco, Anh-mazing Viet Kitchen, Kyoto Matcha, just to name a few). I love the Block because there’s something for everyone! You can order apps at one stall, entrees at another, and dessert from somewhere else all in one place. The food at each stall is unique, the decor is highly a e s t h e t i c, and it’s fun that there’s a bar in the middle of it all.

Vegetable dumplings from Bob’s

6. Bob’s Shanghai 66 (off of North Washington street near Rockville town center)— You might know and love Bob’s for their xiaolongbao (dumplings filled with soup and meatballs, also known as XLB or soup dumplings), but really everything is excellent. All of the dishes taste handmade and you can tell they’ve put a lot of time into perfecting their recipes. Fun fact: They were cash only for YEARS but now accept venmo and will let you prepay with credit card for pick up orders. Favorite dishes– Salt & pepper flounder, vegetable dumplings.

Sushi from Kusshi

5. Kusshi (in Pike & Rose)— Before the pandemic, Kusshi was both the place to have an elegant evening of sushi and the place to have a night of fun. They would often have samples of different Japanese alcohols and have dance parties with DJs. Since the pandemic hit, they have switched things up and now offer a huge range of Japanese snacks– these set Kusshi apart and make it a fun destination! My favorite dishes– Fried shumai, spicy tuna roll (add avocado and mango– not technically on the menu, but sometimes they’ll do it if you ask nicely).

Bagel with veggie cream cheese and whitefish from Ize’s

4. Ize’s (across from Pike & Rose, on the opposite side of Old Georgetown)— The BEST bagels south of New York (in my opinion). The bagels are perfectly sized and have just the right texture. Ize’s is a well-oiled machine and they move quickly, make sure to know your order BEFORE you get in line. Favorite dish– plain bagel (untoasted) with veggie cream cheese and a side of white fish salad.

Pescado a lo Macho from La Limeña Grill

3. La Limeña Grill (off of 355 across from Best Buy)– Mouthwatering Peruvian food. They have a huge list of seafood-forward appetizers (including ceviche). This is one restaurant where I consistently order the same thing every time because it’s so good: Pescado a lo Macho– fried fresh tilapia topped with a blend of seafood and special sauce, served with rice and crispy potatoes. No idea what’s in their secret sauce, but you can tell how much love and care they put into making it.

Lobster Omelette from Julii

2. Julii (in Pike & Rose) — A night (or brunch) out at Julii feels like you’re on vacation. The French-Mediterranean food is both beautiful and delicious. They also have a great range of gorgeous cocktails and an excellent brunch menu. My favorite dishes– Scallops risotto, French onion soup, L’omelette Lobster.

Dishes from Commonwealth Indian

1. Commonwealth Indian (in Pike & Rose) — Commonwealth is my number one favorite–  I love Indian food to begin with, but the fine dining twists from Commonwealth really take everything to another level. It’s one of the most luxurious spots in the area and is the perfect place to go when you’re looking to treat yourself or celebrate a special occasion! My favorite dishes– Yellow crab curry, Tandoori octopus, Spinach mango chat

Want to Eat a Cicada? Some DMV Area Spots Are Giving You That Option!

You may have seen (and heard) the Brood X cicadas that recently emerged.   Cicadas are edible, and some local businesses have decided to offer items containing cicadas or cicada-themed goodies.

Here are some spots throughout the DMV where you can find treats celebrating the 17 year bugs:

Photo courtesy of Chef Seng’s instagram

Chef Seng Luangrath, the head chef of Laotian restaurant Thip Khao in DC, has shared photos of cicada dishes on her instagram. So far, the chef has shared photos of crispy fried cicadas, cicada scampi, and avocado toast topped with cicadas. There were some questions about whether Thip Khao would be offering cicada items or not. However we spoke with Chef Seng, who said the restaurant will in fact offer cicada entrees due to requests from a lot of customers. She hopes that the new menu will be finalized and available to the public this week.

Cocina on Market, based in Leesburg, VA, is offering cicada tacos as one of their specials. The Mexican restaurant is best known for their seasonally inspired cuisine, which includes cricket tacos on their regular menu. Their cicada tacos will be finished with Mole verde, avocado, radish, and pickled local ramps.

Courtesy of Chouquette’s instagram

MoCo-based Chouquette chocolates offers three different types of cicada-themed chocolates. They’re selling chocolate covered cicadas, available in 3 different flavors. The description on their website says “ NOT A JOKE – these are REAL Brood X cicadas – currently gathered from Silver Spring, Gaithersburg and Potomac MD.  We gather the cicadas as they shed from their exoskeletons, and emerge as young adults. Recipe: Gather Fresh Cicadas. Freeze. Boil. Airfry. Cinnamon Sprinkle. Cover in Chocolate.  Enjoy??” Their website also has this warning:” Individuals with Shellfish allergies should check with their physician before ingesting…All food has a variety of risks associated with it. With insects, the risks are estimated to be relatively small.”

For those who don’t wish to eat actual cicadas, they offer cicada shaped chocolates stuffed with marshmallow cream and they also offer chocolate covered caramels with cicada-themed art on them.

Courtesy of True Respite’s Instagram

Cicada themed beers are also available at a couple of MoCo breweries. True Respite, located in Rockville, is selling Cicada Maibock Lager beers, with cicada artwork decorating the cans. On their instagram, True Respite describes the beer as “A classic German-style Maibock Lager. This lager is toasty with a little hint of spicy Noble hop character, restrained sweetness, and a crisp finish. This style is traditionally brewed as a springtime refresher…” The artwork was created by MoCo resident Ashley Hauck of  @spicymustarddesigns

Courtesy of Silver Branch Brewing on Instagram

Silver Branch Brewing, located in Silver Spring, also has a beer named in honor of the cicadas. Their “BREW’D X IPA” sold out of cans within the first three days, but this brew is still available on tap at their brewery.  Silver Branch reassures us that “no Cicadas were harmed in the making of this hoppy, juicy IPA.” They describe the beer as “juicy, springtime IPA made with wheat and oats, Mosaic hop concentrate and a fruity new hop blend called Citiva.”

Courtesy of 7 Locks Brewing’s instagram.

Another local brewery offering a cicada-themed beer: Rockville-based 7 Locks Brewing! They shared this on their instagram: “For the Brood X, we welcome Brew’d X to our lineup. And like the Brood X, Brew’d X is only around for a limited time… a sessionable pale ale at 4.8%, Brew’d X is both Buzzworthy & Crushable.”

Have you noticed any other cicada-themed treats in the area? Let us know!

Signage Is up for Future Wegmans in Rockville

A couple of days ago, signage went up along Rockville Pike announcing the future home of MoCo’s newest Wegmans.

The Wegmans and surrounding new development will be right next to Twinbrook metro, occupying the former home of Pizza CS, Hooters, Fuddruckers, Salvation Army, and more.

This area will be developed into a district known as Twinbrook Quarter.    According to the website of the architecture firm involved, Twinbrook Quarter will feature 175,000 square feet of retail, 200,000 square feet of office space and over 1,400 new residential units.  Back in August, we wrote a post sharing some details of the upcoming development.

At the moment the area is surrounded by a chain link fence and signs from a demolition company have been put up, which seems to indicate that groundbreaking will happen soon.

We first heard about this Wegmans back in 2018 when their lease was signed. A representative from Wegmans who we spoke to today estimates that the new location will be open in 2022, assuming everything is on track with construction.

IPIC in Pike & Rose Shares Tentative Reopening Date of May 21

After being closed for over a year due to the pandemic, an assistant general manager at IPIC shared with us that the luxury theater plans to reopen towards the end of this month.

Movie goers can expect some small changes to the IPIC experience. Temperatures will be taken at the door, seats in the theater will be 6 feet apart, and capacity will be reduced.

Pillows will no longer be offered, but blankets will still be available upon request. (We were told that the ticket prices will be adjusted to reflect this change.)

For a look at what a typical evening at IPIC was like before the pandemic hit, check out our post that we wrote a while back.

More information about IPIC can be found here.

Additionally, IPIC and their associated restaurant City Perch are both hiring right now. If you’re interested, you can check out their job listings here.

Shouk, A Kosher Street Food Restaurant, Will Open Two MoCo Locations This Fall

Today, Shouk announced that they would be opening two new locations this fall– one in Westwood Shopping Center in Bethesda, and another in Rockville’s Montrose Shopping Center.

Shouk is best known for their plant-based, Kosher street food. Per their website, their menu is “Inspired by the bold flavors of the world’s liveliest street markets, we craft our food from real ingredients you can pronounce. Fresh vegetables, beans, grains, and lots of spices.”

Their offerings include stuffed pitas, homemade veggie burgers (known as “Shouk Burgers”), eggplant burgers, mushroom shawarma, different flavors of hummus, salads with mediterranean ingredients, plant based side dishes (shouk’n nuggets, red lentil soup, cashew labneh), desserts, and more.

They have two locations in DC– one in Mount Vernon and another near Union Market. Throughout the pandemic, Shouk has been offering neighborhood food drops throughout the DMV. The success of their MoCo “hood drops” has inspired the restaurant to open their newest locations here.

From Shouk’s announcement today: “This past year, our pandemic-era HoodDrop program turned DMV neighborhoods into pop-up-Shouks. And our growing community in Montgomery County stepped up big time — in huge and heart-warming numbers — for some Real Good Street Food. So now, we’re sealing the deal.

Thanks to YOU, the Shouk dream’s becoming a reality. Two brand new locations coming this Fall, doubling our reach. And this is just the beginning.”

You can learn more about Shouk here.
