Beyond MoCo

She explained that her father played Lottery games and always had the goal to win enough money to take care of his family. She wants to honor her father’s dream by sharing some of the prize with her sister and her family members. “Happy Dog Groomer” also plans to purchase a new house and a car for herself.


Gaithersburg

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a fire at 9900 Shelburne Terrace (Sawyer Flats apartment complex), off Rio Blvd in Gaithersburg on Tuesday, May 30 around 7:45pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the fire was located in the walls on the third and fourth floors of the 4-story building. The building was evacuated and there were no injuries reported.  We will post an update if additional information becomes available.

I-270

Per the Maryland Attorney General: The Independent Investigations Division of the Office of the Attorney General has identified the decedent and involved officers in the fatal crash that occurred on May 20, 2023, in Montgomery County along I-270. The decedent has been identified as 37-year-old Lawrence White of Washington, D.C.

All the involved officers are with the Montgomery County Police Department. The officers are identified as Sergeant Brett Trahan, a 29-year veteran; Police Officer III Kyle Baxter, a 9-year veteran; Police Officer III Jonathan Johnson, a 5-year veteran; and Police Officer Quinton Bowles, who has approximately a year-and-a-half of law enforcement experience. All of the officers are assigned to the Patrol Services Bureau.


Restaurants

Flip’d by IHOP at 8537 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring will be closing on June 1.  The restaurant opened on September 20, 2022 in the space that was previously occupied by Asian Bistro Cafe, between Panera and Red Lobster. Flip’d is a quick-service version of IHOP that features some of the chain’s best selling items made to order for carryout and delivery. IHOP has full service locations in Gaithersburg, Germantown, Olney, Rockville, Wheaton, Silver Spring, and Takoma Park.

Maryland

Per the State or Maryland: On this Memorial Day, the Moore-Miller administration honored those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The Governor, Lt. Governor Aruna Miller and First Lady Dawn Moore attended events across Maryland with veterans, Gold-Star and military families.

In the afternoon, the governor attended the Baltimore Orioles game with Maryland Gold Star families.


Germantown

The Germantown Flea Market returns this Saturday, June 3, from 8am-1pm at the MARC rail commuter lot at the intersection of Germantown Rd. (Rt. 118) and Bowman Mill Drive. Additional details below courtesy of the Germantown Historical Society:

Montgomery Village

Coming soon signage is up at Baskin Robbins in the Montgomery Village Center. The ice cream shop will be located next to the upcoming Safe Splash Swim School and Suburban Hair. Construction on the interior of the store has just recently begun and no opening date has been announced. Baskin Robbins opened a location earlier this month at 1079 Seven Locks Rd in Potomac Woods Plaza and will hold its official grand opening event on Saturday, June 3, from 11-4pm

Other businesses expected to open in the shopping center this year include Antojitos Salvadoreños Isabel, Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken, and Fiesta Laundromat. In April we let you know that Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, which was scheduled to open in the space next to Kobe Japan, appears to no longer be coming to the shopping center. The space is now listed as available again on the shopping center’s leasing website.


Crime

Per MCPD: 30-year-old, Trevor Copeland of Silver Spring has been arrested after walking around a Germantown neighborhood, while openly carrying an assault rifle.  On Thursday, April 27, 2023, officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District- Community Action Team received a report of an individual walking around an apartment complex in the 23000 block of Sweetgum Circle, carrying an assault rifle and knocking on random doors.

When officers arrived at the complex, they quickly made contact with Copeland, who was on the 3rd floor. Following several minutes of communication, officers quickly apprehended Copeland. When Copeland was taken into custody, he was in possession of a Privately Manufactured Firearm (PMF) short-barreled assault rifle loaded with 300 black ammunition rounds, with one round in the chamber.


MCDOT

Per MCDOT: On Wednesday, May 31, starting at 7 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a hybrid meeting to discuss and identify permanent treatments of the East Silver Spring Neighborhood Greenway project.  The public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments.

MCDOT will begin a design project to look at potential neighborhood greenway treatments to slow cars and reduce the amount of traffic on Cedar Street between Wayne Avenue and Bonifant Street, Bonifant Streetbetween Cedar Street and Grove Street, Houston Street between Cedar Street and Thayer Avenue, and Woodbury Drive between Sligo Avenue and Philadelphia Avenue. It will also consider how to make pilot treatments installed in 2021 on Grove Street between Bonifant Street and Sligo Avenue permanent. The project will also look at a bicyclist and pedestrian connection along Sligo Avenue between Grove Street and Woodbury Drive and a safe, high-visibility crossing of Sligo Avenue in that stretch.


MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and County Councilmembers Marilyn Balcombe, Sidney Katz and Laurie Ann-Sayles this week joined the County’s Community Action Board at a graduation ceremony for 21 residents who participated in the 2023 Community Advocacy Institute (CAI).

The County Executive encouraged the 21 graduates to utilize the skills they learned in the program to help make Montgomery County a more equitable place to live for all residents. The CAB provides governance to the DHHS’ Community Action Agency, including Head Start, and facilitates the CAI. Since 2016, there have been 126 graduates from the program. Many now serve on County advisory groups and nonprofit boards, along with participating actively in a variety of advocacy efforts.
