Montgomery County Receives Nearly $5 Million in HUD Grant Funding & 30 Vouchers to Support Effort to End Homelessness by 2025

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County recently received $4,870,352 from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as part of its Continuum of Care (CoC) grants program. It is the only jurisdiction in Maryland to receive a Special Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) award to address unsheltered and rural homelessness, which is a first-of-its-kind funding initiative. In addition to the $4.8 million in programmatic funds the county received 30 Stability Vouchers that will be allocated through direct referral through the County’s Coordinated Entry System for households experiencing homelessness. These vouchers will be used to ensure people can stay in homes and avoid homelessness. They will be administered by the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County and Rockville Housing Enterprises.

The County’s Interagency Coalition on Homelessness recently reiterated its commitment to end homelessness for all populations by 2025 through its Zero for All campaign. The recently awarded $4.87 million will add to the $10 million already awarded annually from HUD’s CoC NOFO process and the anticipated $84 million allocated in the County Executive’s recommended FY24 operating budget for homeless prevention and services to end homelessness.

Opening Information for Kobe Japan Hibachi & Sushi in Montgomery Village

Kobe Japan Hibachi & Sushi at 19226 Montgomery Village Ave, next to Moe’s Southwest Grill in the Montgomery Village Center, will open this Wednesday, April 25. Kobe Japan has additional Montgomery County locations at 1163 University Blvd E in Takoma Park and 13623 Georgia Ave. Suit A in Aspen Hill. The menu features sushi, sashimi, spring rolls, bento boxes and hibachi (full menu can be seen below).

In other Montgomery Village Center news, last week we let you know that Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, which was scheduled to open in the space next to Kobe Japan, appears to no longer be coming to the shopping center. The space is now listed as available again on the shopping center’s leasing website.

In-Person Public Meeting on the Flower Avenue Separated Bike Lanes Project in Silver Spring to be Held on Tuesday, May 9

Per MCPD: On Tuesday, May 9, starting at 6:30 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold an in-person public meeting to discuss the latest progress of the Flower Avenue Bike Lanes project in Silver Spring. The public will have an opportunity to attend in person to ask questions and provide comments.

The Flower Avenue Bike Lanes project provides for designing and constructing high-priority bicycle and pedestrian improvements. The project proposes approximately 0.2 miles of separated bike lanes along Flower Avenue between Piney Branch Road (MD 320) to Arliss Street. The project will also include streetscape improvements for pedestrian/ADA access, transit access, roadway/pavement, parking, drainage, stormwater management, traffic signals, signing and marking, plantings and lighting.

Collision Results in Two Overturned Vehicles Tuesday Afternoon

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision involving two vehicles on Tuesday, April 25 around 12pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the collicion occurred at the interscetion of Parkland Dr & Faroe Pl in Wheaton. One adult was transported to the hospital with Priority 2 trauma. We will post an update if additional information becomes available.

MCFRS Respond to Truck Fire on I-270 Tuesday Afternoon

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a vehicle fire on northbound I-270 (prior to Exit 6A MD 28 W Montgomery Ave) on Tuesday, April 25 around 12pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the vehicle involved was semi-trailer truck that was packed full of paper products. MCFRS units pulled pallets out from the truck and extinguished the smoldering debris. WTOP reports that cleanup is ongoing as of 1:30pm. Drivers should expect residual delays. We will post an update when additional information is available.

Arrest Made for Strong Arm Robbery and Assault on a Police Officer

Per the Takoma Park Police Department: Chief Antonio DeVaul from the Takoma Park Police Department announces the arrest of Ronald Miranda-Montoya, 30, of Silver Spring, Maryland, for strong-arm robbery, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, failure to obey and disorderly conduct.

On April 23, at approximately 2:46 pm, Takoma Park Police responded to the victim’s residence for the report of a strong-arm robbery that occurred earlier in the 900 block of East West Highway. The victim exited an establishment when he was approached by Miranda-Montoya demanding property from him. The victim did not comply and Miranda-Montoya assaulted him and took the property. Officers later found Miranda-Montoya at a bus stop where he became hostile towards officers. Miranda-Montoya was placed under arrest after resisting and assaulting officers.

Update: Four Children and One Adult Injured After Collision Involving School Bus Monday Morning

Montgomery County Police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a collision involving a Montgomery County Public Schools bus on Monday, April 24, around 9:30am in the 13000 block of Old Columbia Pike in Fairland.

Four children (initially reported as five) and the driver were on the bus at the time of the collision. According to MCPD, “one child was extricated from the bus, but everyone was transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries” The ages of the children have not yet been released. According to a report, the bus was traveling to Fairland Elementary School.

Paris Baguette offers cakes, gourmet sandwiches, salads, and an assortment of baked goods such as croissants and donuts.
