MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County’s observance of Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 11, includes participation in the national “Operation Green Light” salute to veterans and the County’s Commission on Veterans Affairs displays at two local sites and on its special website. Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and the County Council are supporting the effort to join Operation Green Light, a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties to honor those who have made immeasurable sacrifices to preserve freedom. The program has asked businesses and residences to honor veterans to display green lights in windows and outdoor lights to show support.

Montgomery County’s Memorial Plaza, which is located adjacent to the County Executive Building at 101 Monroe St. in Rockville, will continue to be lit with green lights through Nov. 13 More information about Operation Green Light is available at https://www.naco.org/blog/counties-take-action-participate-operation-green-light-veterans.


Maryland

Per the State of Maryland: ANNAPOLIS, MD—Following Tuesday’s gubernatorial election, Governor Larry Hogan today met with Governor-Elect Wes Moore to discuss the smooth and orderly transition to the incoming administration. Following a private meeting in the governor’s office at the State House in Annapolis, the governor and governor-elect took questions from the media.

“I was very pleased to have the honor of welcoming Governor-Elect Wes Moore to the State House and we had a really productive one-on-one conversation—and we also had our teams meeting simultaneously to review and hand off transition documents,” said Governor Hogan. “Our entire administration is going to do everything we possibly can to not only ensure a peaceful transition of power, but to help them get up to speed with anything they will need.”


Highways / Interstates

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue services responded to a “well-involved” vehicle fire and collision on Thursday, November 10, around 1pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the incident occurred on Northbound 270 past Rockledge Dr.  The fire has been extinguished and EMS is currently evaluating one patient. Some lanes are currently blocked and drivers should expect delays. We will post an update when additional information becomes available.

Silver Spring

The third male, later identified as Willians Anderson Alberto Cruz, was found in a wooded area towards the back of 100 block of Colony Road suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Montgomery County Police Officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel immediately performed life-saving measures, however Alberto Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth male victim was located uninjured at the scene.


Gaithersburg

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Nijade Grant, a missing 16-year-old from Gaithersburg. Grant was last seen by family in the 900 block of Clopper Road at approximately 3 p.m., on Wednesday, November 9, 2022.  At approximately 10 p.m., that same day, Grant was seen at Union Station, in Washington D.C.

Grant is 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs approximately 190 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair. She was last seen wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and black leggings.  Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Williams is 5-feet, 4-inches tall and weighs approximately 170 pounds. She has brown eyes and brown hair. It is unknown what clothing she was last seen wearing.  Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Silver Spring

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 3rd District Investigative Section are investigating a burglary that occurred on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at Silver Spring International Middle School in the 300 block of Wayne Ave. in Silver Spring. Detectives have released surveillance video of the suspect and are asking the public’s assistance in identifying him.

At approximately 9:49 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the location for the report of a burglary that just occurred.  The investigation by detectives has determined that the suspect forced entry into the school, stole items from classrooms and left the scene.


Maryland

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Larry Hogan today announced a series of major new actions to expand on federal-state efforts to fight violent crime and hold violent criminals accountable. The governor made the announcement at Maryland State Police (MSP) Barrack P in Glen Burnie, where he was joined by U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek Barron, MSP Superintendent Colonel Woodrow “Jerry” Jones, Secretary Robert Green of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS), along with participating state and local law enforcement agencies.

“Addressing violent crime has been an important focus of our administration, and a critical piece of that has been increasing collaboration and coordination,” said Governor Hogan. “I want to thank U.S. Attorney Barron for his partnership, and for his strong commitment to tackling violent crime. By working together, we are going to use every tool at our disposal to make our neighborhoods safer.”

She is believed to be in the company of 13-year-old, Jayleen Chavez. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Restaurant

Over a year ago we let you know that Black Lion Café, which has a location at 9705 Traville Gateway Dr in Rockville, will be opening a new location in the Fenton Silver Spring apartments at 8240 Fenton St in Downtown Silver Spring.  Originally scheduled to open on November 1, Source of the Spring now reports that opening has been postponed due to a delay in the cafe’s final inspection. A new opening date has not yet been announced.

The cafe opened its first location at the Traville Gateway shopping center in late 2016. Black Lion Café sources its coffee from three regions of Ethiopia known for producing some of the best tasting coffee beans in the world. Keffa, the region of Ethiopia that gave the name ‘coffee’ to the bean, Yergacheffe, and Harrar.
