Silver Spring

Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Monday morning in Downtown Silver Spring. According to MCPD, “At approximately 10:36 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the intersection of Fenton Street and Ellsworth Drive for shots fired.  Preliminarily, investigators have determined that two Black males were shooting at one another.  During this incident, a commercial business and a car driving on Fenton Street towards Ellsworth were struck. There are no reports of anyone shot and investigators believe that this shooting is contained between the two males.

Colesville

 At approximately 9:12 a.m., 3rd District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the area of Randolph Road and Hammonton Place for the report of a traffic collision involving two vehicles.   The driver of the Chevy Silverado was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The driver of the Honda CRV was pronounced dead at the scene.  

 A formal news release will be distributed as more information becomes available. The decedent’s name will be released following proper notification of next of kin.”


Glenmont

A 19-year-old male was located at the scene and transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. The striking vehicle did not remain on scene. Preliminarily, CRU detectives believe the striking vehicle may be a dark red or maroon 2003-2007 Honda Accord, which is missing a side view mirror.  A formal news release will be distributed as more information becomes available.”

MDLottery

The Powerball jackpot has been hit five times this year, with the top amount of $632.6 million hit Jan. 5 and split between two tickets sold in California and Wisconsin. Lottery officials encourage all winners to sign the backs of their tickets immediately and put them in a safe location. They get 182 days from the date of the drawing to claim their prizes.

Maryland

This is especially true right now for owners of Hyundai and Kia vehicles, which have been stolen at increased rates both in Maryland and nationwide, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. (NICB). Nationally, there were a combined 59,991 Hyundai and Kia stolen this year through Aug. 31. This compares to 58,683 for all of 2021.

The Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council recommends that if you have a 2016-2021 Hyundai or 2011-2021 Kia model that is started by a key, consider taking the following preventive measures:


Bethesda

Montgomery County Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at the Bethesda Row Apple Store in Bethesda on Saturday evening. According to MCPD, “On Saturday, October 22, 2022, at approximately 5:59 p.m., 2nd District officers responded to the 4600 block of Bethesda Ave., for the report of an armed robbery. The unknown suspect, armed with a handgun, entered the Apple store and took an unknown amount of merchandise. No injuries were reported. The suspect is not in custody.

Detectives provided the following suspect description: Black male, approximately 5-feet, 7-inches tall to 5-feet, 8-inches tall, thin build, in his early 20s, wearing a red Nike hoodie and surgical mask. This is an active and ongoing investigation. ”


Beyond MoCo

Per the Smithsonian:

Staff at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute are mourning the loss of Luke, an African lion who was humanely euthanized Oct. 19. He was 17 years old. The median life expectancy for African lions in human care is 17 years.


Gaithersburg

At approximately 8:42 p.m., 6th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for the report of a pedestrian struck. The victim was pronounced dead on scene. For reasons still under investigation, the victim, who was located in the roadway, was hit by a red Saturn Aura. The driver of the Saturn remained on scene following the collision.


Maryland
