As detailed in a news release by the U.S. Attorney’s office, 39-year-old Rey Rivera Ruiz, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, the alleged leader was indicted on May 26, with one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine, one count of continuing criminal enterprise — causing the intentional death of Shantay Butler, 44 — and one count of causing the death through the use of a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking offense.

In addition, 26-year-old Jann Jousten Aponte Rivera, and 20-year-old Michael Gabriel Hernandez Rivera, both of San Juan, Puerto Rico, were indicted on one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine, one count of continuing criminal enterprise — causing the intentional death of Shantay Butler– and one count of causing the death through the use of a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking offense.


Germantown

All programming scheduled to take place at the Center throughout the closure will take place at alternate locations, with the exception of early voting. The Center will remain open as an Early Voting location from July 7 – 14.


Germantown

On Saturday, May 14, 2022, the victim reported that in the overnight hours of May 13, an unknown suspect broke the rear passenger window of their vehicle, parked in the12500 block of Great Park Circle, and stole their wallet. The suspect then attempted to use the victim’s bank card at an ATM. The withdrawals were declined.

Anyone with information regarding this suspect is asked to call the 5th District Patrol Investigations Unit at 240-773-6263.


Gaithersburg

The Pollo Campero located inside of Lakeforest Mall (701 Russell Ave) in Gaithersburg has officially announced it will  be closing when the new location at 426 N Frederick Rd, the former site of KFC, opens.  Representative from the Lakeforest location tell us that the new store is expected to open on July 17.

Pollo Campero has additional Montgomery County locations in Takoma Park and Wheaton. The Downtown Silver Spring location closed in December, 2021.


Silver Spring

At approximately 4:25 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the Solaire Apartment Complex for the report of a burglary that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives has determined that at approximately 4:02 a.m., the suspect entered the apartment building through a rear door. The suspect then accessed the mailroom through an unknown manner and began loading packages into a cart. When an employee entered the mailroom, the suspect fled the scene through a rear door.

Statement of County Executive Elrich:

“We are currently experiencing multiple incidents of hate in Montgomery County over the past two weeks. On May 31, KKK imagery appeared on internet app searches for Damascus High School.  On June 2, in Kemp Mill, antisemitic flyers were posted at Ride-On Station. Last week, on June 7, swastikas were carved at a MARC train station in Garrett Park. And, over past the weekend, flyers with references to groups affiliated with the KKK were discovered in Chevy Chase.


Gaithersburg

After the COVID-19 pandemic caused cancellations in 2020 and 2021, Independence Day fireworks and celebrations are back in a big way this year. Below is a list of all the MoCo fireworks displays that have been announced:

Beyond MoCo

The City of College Park in Prince George’s County, MD has announced that it has cancelled this year’s fireworks display due to supply chain issues, posting the following on it’s website: “The City of College Park and University of Maryland regret to announce the cancellation of the annual Independence Day Fireworks and Concert due to COVID-19’s continued impact on the supply chain. We apologize for any inconvenience, and anticipate the return of the event in July 2023.

The City’s first Fourth of July parade is still scheduled for 11 a.m. July 4, 2022 on Rhode Island Avenue. The city is still looking for local groups and organizations to participate. Click here for details and an application.”


MoCo Government

The awards will be presented at a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, at the Silver Spring Civic Building. Andrea Roane, the long-time anchor at WUSA-9, will serve as emcee. County Executive Mark Elrich and other County officials and dignitaries will present awards.

Silver Spring

On March 15, 2022, at approximately 8:20 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 8200 block of Georgia Avenue for the report of a robbery that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives has determined that White and Thomas attacked the victim as she was walking towards her apartment complex in the 8200 block of Georgia Ave. They stole her personal property and damaged a package she was carrying before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
