Shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Trooper Jason Reid, who is assigned to the Rockville Barrack,  was on the scene of a motor vehicle crash on the ramp from eastbound I-495 to southbound Colesville Road (US 29) in Silver Spring, Maryland. According to a preliminary investigation, a tow truck operator was on the scene working on removing the vehicles involved in the crash. The tow truck driver, a 51-year-old male, was working on getting a Chevrolet Equinox onto the back of his tow truck.

While the driver was attempting to attach the winch to the underside of the vehicle, the Chevrolet Equinox slipped off the back of the tow truck bed and fell on top of him. Trooper Reid saw what happened, and despite having no previous training on the equipment, he was able to use the tow truck’s controls to lower the tow truck’s bed to the ground and re-position it underneath the front of the Chevrolet Equinox. Trooper Reid then used the rear of the tow truck’s bed to lift the car off of the victim and then pull him away from the vehicle.

Java Nation will be opening its new location at 121 Market Street in the Kentlands neighborhood of Gaithersburg on Wednesday, May 25. Java Nation is best known for its house-roasted coffees, diverse food menu, and wide variety of local craft beers, wines and artisan cocktails. We first let you know that Java Nation would be coming to the former Kentlands Starbucks location back in January 2021. Material and equipment delays by manufacturers had pushed back the opening of the restaurant several times.

Much like the Rockville/N.Bethesda location, the Kentlands location will feature entertainment such as live music, comedy shows, dramatic readings and other community events. From the Java Nation website: Serving the best artisan coffees and traditional food made with love and delivered with first class service. That has continued to be our mission since our inception in 2012. The concept for Java Nation came to creation when a local resident realized an absence for a great cup of coffee in the community. Beyond our focus to serve freshly roasted coffee to our local community, we source local produce, use environmentally friendly products, and support work from local artists.

Philosophy is a tool for life, in Professor Jenkins’ view, and he strives to share it with students: he organizes the Humanities Day Ethics Essay Contest, hosts the Jefferson Cafe, and is coach of the MC Ethics Bowl Team. This team was awarded 1st place in the Maryland Regional Community College Ethics Bowl in both 2011 & 2012 under Professor Jenkins’ tutelage. He recently partnered with colleagues in science, engineering and technology to develop a modern application of ethics to these fields. The result was special sessions of the “Introduction to Ethics” course aimed at the specific needs of students in engineering, computer science, and cybersecurity, who may face philosophical questions about topics like autonomous technologies in their future professional work.

Professor Jenkins’ impact on students is his greatest joy. Enrollment in his classes is consistently high and students describe him as an empathetic, encouraging, and challenging teacher. His students praise his continued encouragement and credit him for pushing them to recognize their own potential, even years after they were enrolled in his classes. One of his former students, who had struggled academically and is now working on a master’s degree, wrote, “Professor Jenkins met me at my needs and because of that, I am the person that I am today. I am fierce, strong, resilient, and independent.”

Coca-Cola announced Monday that it would be phasing out the Honest Tea line from its portfolio. Bethesda resident Seth Goldman cofounded the drink company in 1998 and was its CEO until 2015– when he stepped back and  became executive chairman of Beyond Meat. In 2008, The Coca-Cola Company took a 40% investment stake in Honest Tea before fully acquiring the brand in 2011. Coca-Cola will continue to market and sell the Honest Kids line of beverages. Goldman tweeted, “Today’s announcement by Coca-Cola that they will be discontinuing @HonestTea  is a gut punch to all the sweat, tears, and incredible passion that went into building our beloved brand. My thoughts are with our longtime partners and friends, the #organic and @FairTradeCert farmers who helped develop their communities and protect their ecosystems with the tens of millions of pounds of sugar and spice they sold us.”

The Coca-Cola system will continue to produce and distribute the HONEST Kids line of organic juice drinks and explore licensing ventures and innovation opportunities for the HONEST brand in other categories. “We are phasing out the HONEST teas product line, but are not selling the HONEST brand,” Tandon clarified.

Under legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2013, the Comptroller announces gas tax increases on or before June 1 of each year that are set to take effect on July 1. The tax increase is calculated by the Comptroller’s Office.

“This tax increase, while hardship-inducing for Marylanders at any time, is simply unconscionable at this moment when gas prices are already at their highest level in recorded history amid a period of prolonged inflation and economic uncertainty,” writes Governor Hogan in a letter to the comptroller. “I know that you agree we should do more to give Marylanders a break from these punishing prices. That is why it is my hope that you will use every legal and regulatory power at your disposal to halt or minimize the impact of the accelerating gas taxes, and that you consider granting an extension for paying the taxes and removing penalties for unpaid tax, including the revocation of business licenses.”
