The United States Capitol Police released a statement on Tuesday warning of “aggressive fox encounters” on or near the grounds of the U.S. Capitol after a fox bit Rep. Ami Bera (D-California). on Monday night.
“We have received several reports of aggressive fox encounters on or near the grounds of the U.S. Capitol.
For your safety, please do not approach any foxes.
Animal Control Officers are working to trap and relocate any foxes they find.”
Rep. Bera told Heather Caygle of Punchbowl news that the fox attack was unprovoked and that he “didn’t see it and all of a sudden I felt something lunge at the back of my leg.”

“I didn’t see it and all of a sudden I felt something lunge at the back of my leg,” Bera said.

Yesterday, Capitol Police tweeted that the fox was captured and would be relocated.
This morning, Rep. Bera tweeted that he was back at work.
“Thanks everyone for the well wishes! I feel healthy and am glad to be back at work.
Despite the dustup, I hold no grudge or ill will against @thecapitolfox. Hoping the 🦊 and its family are safely relocated and wishing it a happy and prosperous future.”
A Twitter account for the fox, @thecapitolfox has already gained over 4,000 followers, but the story takes a sad turn.
Per DC Health, earlier today:
“The fox responsible for the attacks on Capitol Hill yesterday was captured and humanely euthanized so that rabies testing may be done. We expect the results of the tests to be available later today. The fox was an adult female and kits were found and captured in the area where the fox was from earlier this morning. If this fox is determined to be the parent of the kits, they will be sent to a wildlife rehabilitation center, otherwise they will be relocated in the area they were found.”
The fox ended up testing positive for rabies.
