Bomb Squad On Scene Investigating Claim of Explosive at Wheaton High-Rise

Updated at 12:45pm with additional information; threat has been determined to be of “no hazard”

The incident at 11215 Georgia Ave in Wheaton “is over and occupants are re-occupying their apartments. Fire/Rescue units are picking up and going in service. Roads in the area are being re-opened”, according to Battalion Chief Jason Blake of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS).

At approximately 6:30 Thursday morning, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) were dispatched to the 11200 block of Georgia Ave in Wheaton. Originally dispatched for a fire alarm, crews arrived at the Arrive Wheaton apartments and along with the bomb squad and police department, began to investigate the claim of an explosive in the building.

The building was evacuated as a precaution and initially some lanes were blocked, but we have been told by a resident on the scene that the road has been completely closed in the area of Georgia Avenue and Reedie Drive (approximately 9:45am).

Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein held a media briefing at approximately 11:45am stating that Goldstein stated that a person “made comments about having a bomb in his unit” and that “items of concern” were found in an 8th floor apartment, but that the items were determined to be of “no hazard.” When asked about the items of concern, Goldstein stated that it could be a wide range of elements and that it’s too early to provide information about what that was.

An update at 12:42pm by Battalion Chief Jason Blake stated that “the incident is over and occupants are re-occupying their apartments. Fire/Rescue units are picking up and going in service. Roads in the area are being re-opened.”
