Per the Arc Montgomery County: The Arc Montgomery County kicked off their 65thanniversary on Sunday, June 25, 2023 on the beautiful campus of the Barrie School.  The event, with full reserved capacity of over 300 registered attendees, included the installation of the 2023-2024 Board of Directors, presented by Montgomery County Council President Evan Glass, and an awards ceremony recognizing community partners, including Montgomery Parks Program Access, who have gone above and beyond in supporting The Arc’s mission of inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Immediately following the awards ceremony there was a celebration picnic with a grill buffet, DJ, raffle prizes, a moon bounce, arts & crafts, and a photo booth for everyone of all ages and abilities to celebrate together.  Councilmember Will Jawando delivered a proclamation honoring this historic anniversary during a cake-cutting ceremony.

As part of its 96th birthday celebration, 7-Eleven will be giving away free small Slurpees on Tuesday, July 11. 7-Eleven has been running the “Free Slurpee Day” promotion since 2002. The company is also launching a  new look for its frozen drink as part of the retailer’s new “Anything Flows” campaign.

During the panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Stefanie Trop, Director of Life Sciences at the Maryland Department of Commerce, local leaders emphasized that the region’s strength lies in its network of partners who work collaboratively across discovery, development, testing, and production. Panelists from companies in all stages of the value chain spectrum included Dr. Andrew Lees, Founder of Fina Biosolutions, Benjamin Moutier, Senior Vice-President, Vaccines and Immune Therapies at AstraZeneca, Dr. Helen Sabzevari President & CEO of Precigen, and Dr. Frederick Holtsberg, Chief Scientific Officer of Integrated BioTherapeutics.

This end-to-end capability in close geographical proximity gives companies a unique advantage and is rare to find in other markets, even established ones like San Francisco and Boston. In fact, only a handful of places worldwide offer the combination of infrastructure, expertise, and collaboration found in Montgomery County and if diversity, education and population density are taken into consideration – then Montgomery County standouts even more.

Per Maryland.gov: The Maryland Department of Agriculture is encouraging farmers looking for markets for their hay and straw to provide their contact information for a new state Hay and Straw Directory. “This directory will be a valuable tool for farmers marketing their hay and straw and for their potential customers,” said MDA Secretary Kevin Atticks. “I encourage farmers to take advantage of this promotional tool.”

Event

Join Kaiser Permanente for Healthy at the Harbor, a free community health and wellness event taking place Saturday, June 6, from 11 am to 4 pm at National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Bring your family and friends for free full day of fun, fitness, and preventive care along the waterfront.

Throughout the day, Kaiser Permanente nurses and physicians will offer no-cost health screenings, alongside a health and wellness expo focused on preventive care education. A lively Kids’ Zone will keep children active and entertained with spin-art bikes, face painting, balloon art, games, and more.

Montgomery Parks aims to inspire a new generation of environmental stewards during Latino Conservation Week. Activities planned in Parks July 15-23, 2023.

Montgomery Parks is celebrating the tenth annual Latino Conservation Week July 15-23, 2023, with events and programs to support the Latino community in getting outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources. Latino Conservation Week was started by the Hispanic Access Foundation to connect Latino communities with access to outdoor recreation and conservation education. More than 200 events are planned nationwide to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. Montgomery Parks has several free events planned for adults and children. All events will be conducted in Spanish and English:


MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: The Latino Health Initiative (LHI), one of three minority health initiatives that are part of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), recently hosted its first-ever community health worker (CHW) certification program graduation. The group of 20 graduates was honored following completion of a rigorous six-month training program that included 100 hours of instruction and a 40-hour practicum.

CHWs, also known as health promoters, play a vital role in informing and advocating for community members who face cultural and language barriers in accessing health care services. As trusted frontline health workers, CHWs reach many in the community who are uninsured or underinsured, or otherwise unconnected to health care resources.


MCPD

Montgomery County Police responded to a stabbing on Monday, July 10. According to MCPD, “at approximately 2:27 a.m., officers responded to the 12000 block of Milton St. in Silver Spring for the report of a stabbing that just occurred. Officers arrived at the scene and located an adult male victim, suffering from a laceration on his arm. The victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

MDLottery

Per the Maryland Lottery: Maryland’s 10 retail and 10 mobile sportsbooks combined to generate $2,835,051 in contributions to the state during June 2023. Each sportsbook contributes 15% of its taxable win to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public education programs.

Statewide handle in June totaled $254,476,790, with mobile handle accounting for 95.8% of the total at $243,817,173. Mobile wagering delivered $2,743,809 in contributions to the state during June, while retail sportsbooks contributed $91,242.


MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: On Tuesday, July 11 at 7 p.m., Council President Evan Glass will host the first meeting of the newly formed Anti-Hate Task Force alongside County elected officials and leaders from the Jewish, African American, LGBTQ+, Asian American and Pacific Islander, Latino and Muslim communities. Council President Glass introduced a resolution creating an Anti-Hate Task Force and appointing its members, that was formally adopted with unanimous support during Council session on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.  

The task force kicks off its first meeting on Tuesday, July 11 at 7 p.m. in the Wheaton Library and Community Recreation Center, located at 11701 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. The meeting will be live streamed on YouTube. The task force is expected to hold several meetings in the upcoming months, and present final recommendations in late November.  


Arts

Per Montgomery County: Fela Kuti was the biggest Afro Beat star out of Africa. Olney Theatre currently has a production about his life. From 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11, there will be a free special event primarily featuring the music and dance of Fela Kuti. The event, at Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring, will have the additional components of yoga, arts and crafts, a fashion show and even Nollywood stars–all from the Nigerian community.

Fela Kuti was an empowered activist and musician who used his voice to speak up against the injustices against Nigerians. To speak up for oneself and their community in such an authentically profound and remarkable way, one must be in integrity with himself and the universal Soul that connects all.
