Now that the sale of the Washington Commanders from Dan Snyder to the new ownership group led by Montgomery County native Josh Harris is final, the group will have some decisions to make regarding the future of the franchise, including a possible “complete rebranding of the team.”

According to a tweet by Bleacher Report (seen below), ESPN senior writer Don Van Natta Jr. stated on the Rich Eisen Show that “There’s a ‘pretty good chance’ the new ownership of the Washington Commanders will change the franchise name and have a ‘complete re-branding’ of the team.”

MCDOT Declares Adult Bike Classes a Success

MCDOT sponsored six adult bike classes and most sessions were sold out with 156 registrants. Most attendees were able to ride a bike by the end of the class. The classes offered residents an affordable way to include biking as another form of transportation.

Last month, MCDOT hosted the last of four e-scooter safety classes. Over 75 residents learned how to download the vendor apps to rent and operate an e-scooter and were able to take a test ride. They also learned about local e-scooter laws and general safety information. MCDOT has contracts with Bird, Lime, and Spin who operate within certain areas in Montgomery County and participated in one or more of the four training classes.

MCPS Calendar (August/September)

We are at the approximate halfway point of the summer of 2023 so we’ll be taking a look at what’s to come in August and September the MCPS “traditional school calendar” (includes all schools except for Arcola Elementary School and Roscoe Nix Elementary School).

Teachers will report back to school for their first professional day of pre-service week on Monday, August 21st. They’ll continue to report for the remainder of the week, as pre-service week concludes on Friday, August 25th. Students report to school for their first day on Monday, August 28th.

Wisdom Martin Celebrates Final Broadcast With FOX 5 After 20 Years

Wisdom Martin joined the FOX 5 News team in 2003. 20 years later, he celebrated his last broadcast with FOX 5 with the network where he has recently been the morning anchor, starting the day at 4 a.m. through 6 a.m. and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Good Day DC (his goodbye video is available below). Martin has not yet disclosed his next chapter.

Per FOX 5: His career started while he was a sophomore at Jackson State University. His first job in TV news was running the teleprompter on the weekends at WAPT news. From there he worked his way up to news photographer, editor and sports reporter for the weekend shows, before graduating.

Maryland Natural Resources Police Remind Marylanders to Practice Water Safety

Per the Maryland Department of Natural Resources: Maryland’s boating and swimming season is in full swing and the Maryland Natural Resources Police is urging Marylanders to take proper precautions to ensure safe enjoyment of Maryland’s waterways this summer. So far this year, Maryland Natural Resources Police have responded to more than five boating-related deaths and eight non-boating related drownings, including four fatal incidents during the July 4 holiday weekend.

“Maryland is one of the nation’s leading destinations for summertime water recreation,” Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Josh Kurtz said. “With the increased enjoyment of our waterways, state parks, rivers, and streams, it is essential that residents and visitors adhere to safety protocols and regulations that keep our recreational waterways safe and enjoyable for everyone.”

Maryland Department of the Environment Encourages Water Conservation with Drought Watch for Portions of the State

Per The Maryland Department of the Environment: The Maryland Department of the Environment is urging citizens and businesses in a large part of the state to voluntarily reduce their water usage as a drought watch has been issued. “Water conservation is a good practice year-round, but we are asking residents and businesses to pay particular attention during the summer months when the State can experience hot and dry conditions,” said Maryland Department of the Environment Secretary Serena McIlwain.

“You can do your part by limiting the use and duration of sprinklers for lawns, taking short showers as opposed to baths, and not leaving the faucet running while brushing your teeth. These things sound simple, but it all adds up.” A drought watch has been issued for Western Maryland and portions of Central Maryland based on lower-than-normal stream flows and groundwater levels for this time of year. During a drought watch, MDE increases oversight of water supply conditions and encourages voluntary water conservation practices. No mandatory water use restrictions have been issued.

Ensemble at 4856 Cordell Ave in Bethesda has closed. Ensemble was a “digital food hall” from Catalogue Brands, the restaurant group behind Ted’s Bulletin, Federalist Pig, Honeymoon Chicken, Sidekick Bakery, and Kramers. Food from Ensemble was available for pickup or delivery and its menu featured the most popular items from several Catalogue restaurants that could be mixed and matched, all coming from one kitchen.

Governor Wes Moore Celebrates the Official Portrait Unveiling of Governor Martin O’Malley and First Lady Judge Catherine O’Malley

Martin O’Malley served as the 61st governor of the State of Maryland. Prior to being elected in 2006 and serving two terms from 2007-2015, he was appointed as Assistant State’s Attorney for the City of Baltimore in 1988; served on the Baltimore City Council from 1991-1999; and served as Mayor of the City of Baltimore from 1999-2007.

First Lady Judge Catherine O’Malley was appointed as Assistant State’s Attorney in the Baltimore County District Court, where she served for ten years. In 2001, Judge O’Malley was appointed as Associate Judge of the District Court of Maryland, from which she retired in 2021. She now serves the District Court of Maryland as a senior judge.

NFL clubs today unanimously approved the sale of the Washington Commanders to Josh Harris and his limited partners at a special league meeting in Minneapolis. Statement from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell:

“Congratulations to Josh Harris and his impressive group of partners. Josh will be a great addition to the NFL. He has a remarkable record in business, sports, and in his communities. The diverse group that Josh has put together is outstanding for its business acumen and strong Washington ties and we welcome them to the NFL as well.
