The Alliance for Parks of the Gaithersburg Parks, Arts and Recreation Corporation (G-PARC), along with the Department of Parks, Recreation & Culture, are pleased to announce the Second Annual Photo Contest, designed to showcase the best of Gaithersburg’s Parks, Arts & Recreation. Photos should illustrate the connection between parks, arts & culture, and recreation in the City, and must be taken in a City Park. Photos should fall under one of the following themes.

The top 12 photos will be announced at the end of May. A panel of jurors comprised of local artists, members of G-PARC, & members of the City’s Communication & Public Engagement Divisionwill select the winners. In addition, G-PARC will chose a random winner weekly during the month of April. G-PARC will announce all winners on Instagram & Facebook, and notified via social media channels. The objective of this contest is to expand G-PARC’s social media presence through photo documentation of the City’s parks and activities.

MDSHA To Begin Pavement Improvement Projects on State Roads in Montgomery County This Week

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a project next week to improve several state roads in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Crews will remove line stripping and pavement markings and apply a micro-surface coating that protects and extends the life of the asphalt. Weather permitting, work will be complete by early summer.

Work will take place weekdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and overnights, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. During work hours, motorists can expect lane shifts and single lane closures guided by a flagging operation. The State Highway Administration understands roadwork can be an inconvenience and asks motorists to be patient and stay alert in the work zones. The locations in Montgomery County are as follows:

Police Respond to Shots Fired in Germantown

Montgomery County Police responded to reports of shots fired around 2pm on Sunday April 2. According to MCPD, the incident occurred near the town houses on Celebration Way, off Middlebrook Rd in Germantown (across from Germantown Commons Shopping Center) and stemmed from an argument between several individuals which led to shots being fired. There were no injuries reported and there is believed to be no threat to the community at this time. Two juveniles that were seen running away from the scene were taken into custody but neither was identified as the shooter. The shooter is believed to have left the scene in a vehicle.

Four Juveniles Taken Into Custody Following Stabbing of Teenage Girl Friday Night at Rio

Montgomery County Police and Gaithersburg Police responded to a stabbing on Friday, March 31, at the Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg. According to a report by WTOP, four juveniles were taken into custody following the incident. Officers at the scene located a juvenile female victim who was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Kentlands Baby Bar is planning a Spring opening, according to its website. It Will open at 375 Main St. in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood. The space will offer “food, fun, and socializing” where “you enjoy a coffee and a bite, while your little ones get yummy food and a baby-friendly place to play!” Baby Bar Kentlands will offer fresh fruits and veggies and will have options for babies (puréed or chopped), food for kids like grilled cheese, egg bites, croissants, and more, and food for adults like bagels, muffins, fruit bowls, and more.

The $50,000 Cash game debuted in December with 160 top prizes. This win marks the 38^th time a Maryland Lottery player has uncovered a $50,000 win on the $20 game. There are also still 134 of the game’s $5,000 second-tier prizes remaining to be claimed as well.

The retailer also benefits from selling a top-prize winning scratch-off. Sagar Beer & Wine located at 615 S. Frederick Ave. in Gaithersburg will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling the $50,000 Cash ticket. The store received a $1,000 bonus in December when it sold the lucky Bonus Bingo X20 ticket.”

Germantown WIC Office Has Closed Permanently

The Germantown WIC Office has closed permanently, according to an email sent to families last week. Families are being directed to the Gaithersburg office a few miles away. WIC is a Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. It is an American federal assistance program of the Food and Nutrition Service of the United States Department of Agriculture for healthcare and nutrition of low-income pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and children under the age of five. 41st Annual Olney Community Night to Take Place on Monday, April 10

The Olney Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 41st annual Community Night on Monday, April 10 at Good Counsel High School from 4:30pm-8pm. This free admission event will host over 100 exhibitors and will include food, giveaways, raffles, performances, and family fun (Biz & Family Expo, Taste & Toast of Olney).

Included in the event will be a moon bounce, games, & crafts, a fire safety house, “Vicky” the link fire engine, a DJ Dance Party and photo booth, Cropduster player autographs, local restaurants and food trucks, beer, wine, & spirits, hero dogs, Olney HELP food drive, Olney Lion eyeglass collection, and a lot more.

One Dead After Collision on Norbeck Road

Montgomery County Police are investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Saturday, April 1, at approximately 7:36 p.m., on Norbeck Road near Norwood Road. According to MCPD, “The preliminary investigation has revealed that a vehicle was traveling westbound on Norbeck Road when it crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a vehicle traveling eastbound.

The driver of the striking vehicle sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The adult occupant of the other vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital.

Signage is up for Wild Custom Apparel on the lower level of Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Wild Custom Apparel currently has a location at St. Charles Towne Center in Waldorf, MD. According to its website, “Wild Custom Apparel offers high quality, customized printing or embroidery for your t-shirts, masks, or hoodies.” No opening date has been announced.
