Per MCPS: The Montgomery County Alliance of Black School Educators (MCABSE) is accepting submissions for its annual Distinguished African American Scholars.
Applicants must be graduating MCPS high school seniors who plan to pursue post-secondary studies at an institution of higher learning, including community college and technical training schools, for the 2023–2024 school year. Scholars must be committed to academic excellence and to leadership in their high school schools and communities. Principals, resource counselors and college and career information coordinators are asked to submit the name of one student to represent their school.
By a unanimous vote during its business meeting on Feb. 23, the Board of Education (BOE) approved a $3.2 billion Operating Budget recommendation for Fiscal Year 2024. The request includes a $296 million increase—10%—over the current budget and $272 million above the minimum amount required by the maintenance of effort law.
The budget reflects amendments based on BOE feedback to provide focused investments to improve literacy and math across the district. This includes the addition of supervisors, instructional staff and coaches to increase math and literacy support; oversight and progress monitoring for schools, and increased professional development opportunities for staff. The budget also prioritizes salary increases to support recruitment and retention and the addition of security assistants to promote a safe and inclusive school climate.

Per Montgomery County: The minimum wage will again increase in Montgomery County on July 1. Sponsored by then-County Council member, and current County Executive, Marc Elrich and signed into legislation on Nov. 17, 2017, Bill 28-17 raises the minimum wage incrementally each July 1. Based on the consumer price index for all urban wage earners and clerical workers (CPI-W) for Washington-Baltimore, the Montgomery County Chief Administrative Officer has set the rate for the increase of minimum wage for July 2023 for large employers (those with 51 employees or more) at $16.71 per hour.
After hitting the $15 minimum wage rate in 2021, the law requires the Chief Administrative Officer to adjust the rate each year. The change is based on the previous calendar year. Previous years were based on rate of increase determined by the Montgomery County Council to get to $15. Starting July 1, the County minimum wage will increase to $16.70 per hour for large employers. The rate for mid-sized employers will be $15 per hour. The rate for small employers will be $14.50 per hour.

Lil’ Cakes & Creamery will open its newest location at 844 Rockville Pike, the former site of Sam’s Cafe & Market, on Saturday, March 11. The grand opening will include “free cupcakes or ice cream everyday for a week” to the first 50 guests, face painting, and raffles. Lil’ Cakes & Creamery offers a rotating selection of cupcakes and ice cream, as well as macarons, pupcakes, cookies, cookie sandwiches, pushpops, and milkshakes.
Lil’ Cakes & Creamery opened its first location in Gaithersburg Square back in October 2019 and have additional locations in Urbana and White Marsh.
There is a vacancy on the Planning Commission, and The Town is currently seeking applicants for this position. Applications must be received by March 15th. The Planning Commission consists of 5 town residents, of which one is a Commissioner of Poolesville who serves in an ex officio capacity. The volunteer members serve a 5-year term and meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month (for more information, click here).

Detectives from the Gaithersburg Police Department – Investigative Section have arrested a suspect involved in the shooting that occurred on January 31, 2023, in the area of N. Summit Avenue. With the assistance from the Montgomery County Police – Repeat Offender Unit, police arrested 23-year-old Delonte Jamar Hunter on Tuesday, February 28 in Rockville, where he was taken into custody without incident.
On Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at approximately 6:28 a.m., officers from both the Gaithersburg Police Department and the Montgomery County Police Department – 6th District responded to the area of N. Summit Avenue for the report of a shooting that just occurred. Officers located two adult victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Officers provided first-aid to both victims until Fire and Rescue personnel arrived. The victims were then transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Per Montgomery County: The joint Health and Human Services (HHS) and Education and Culture (EC) Committee will meet on Thursday, March 2 at 9:30 a.m. to discuss FY23-28 Capital Improvements Program (CIP) amendments for the High School Wellness Center and Expanded Wellness Services project. They will also receive updates on the implementation of expanded wellness services in high schools and the implementation of mental health supports for youth. The members of the HHS Committee include Chair Gabe Albornoz and Councilmembers Dawn Luedtke and Laurie-Anne Sayles. The members of the EC Committee include Chair Will Jawando and Councilmembers Albornoz and Kristin Mink.
The Government Operations and Fiscal Policy (GO) Committee will meet at 10 a.m. for a policy discussion about Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB). The committee will also review Expedited Bill 5-23, Personnel and Human Resources – Prospective Employees – Health Care Privacy, and Bill 8-23, Boards, Committees, and Commissions – Open Meetings – Supplemental Requirements. The members of the GO Committee include Chair Kate Stewart, Council Vice President Andrew Friedson and Councilmember Sidney Katz.
The Glenview Mansion and Peerless Rockville Speaker Series marks Women’s History Month in March with “Women Who Dared: Pioneering Rockville Mother and Daughter,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 9 at Glenview Mansion at Rockville Civic Center Park.
Hear the inspirational stories of Clara Finley and her daughter Bliss Finley, Rockville residents who did not let the restrictions placed on women by late 19th- and early 20th-century society hold them back. Clara was a divorced mother with a young child who attended medical school and became a pioneering doctor and supporter of women’s rights and childhood education. Bliss was prominently featured in society columns as a young woman. As she matured, she used her connections to help organize and inspire working women to stand up for the right to vote.

Recommendations included in the plan were developed based on prior studies, plans and public discussions dating back to 1981, and address various historic preservation program needs, such as survey and inventory of historic resources, historic districts, incentives, easements, education and outreach, prehistory, and archaeology.
In addition to providing a needed assessment of programming and policy, the work plan will help develop components to be incorporated in an update to Rockville’s Historic Preservation Plan, formerly known as the Historic Resources Management Plan. The Mayor and Council are scheduled to discuss the work plan at their Monday, March 20 meeting.
