Bethesda

Montgomery Parks is seeking ideas for a new park in downtown Bethesda. The Bethesda Market Park project(opens in a new tab) will repurpose two parking lots adjacent to the historic Montgomery Farm Women’s Cooperative Market. Montgomery Parks will host two in-person public meetings in March to present initial concepts for the park and solicit input from the community.

Each meeting will provide the same information and begin with a brief presentation of the plan followed by an interactive session to give the community a closer look at the project and the opportunity to provide feedback.


Arts

In a free Takoma Park Arts event on Thursday, March 9 at 7:30pm at the Takoma Park Community Center (7500 Maple Ave), four bilingual poets will share their poetry in English and Spanish which transcends borders and unites diverse cultures across political and geographical divides. The featured poets include Rosie Prohías Driscoll, david alberto fernández, David Lott, and Jorge Fernando Sodero.

Per the City of Takoma Park: Rosie Prohías Driscoll is a Cuban-American educator and poet. The daughter of Cuban exiles, she writes about identity and exile, loss and renewal, grief and grace. Her poems have appeared in many journals, and her debut full-length collection Poised for Flight was published last year. She lives in Alexandria and teaches English at Bishop Ireton High School.


Arts

Kensington has many works of commissioned art located in public places throughout Town. Murals and carvings are located in parks and on buildings large and small. Pets are required to be leashed at all times when visiting both Town and County Parks. Pet waste is the responsibility of the pet owner/handler. Pet waste must be picked up and disposed of either in trash or pet waste containers provided within the park or removed from the park and properly disposed of by the pet handler. Visitors to Town and County parks are responsible for adhering to any posted rules or regulations within the parks.


Business

Rockville’s Compost Crew Inc., the largest food scrap recycling company in the Mid-Atlantic, has had announced record year of growth. According to a recent press release, the company more than doubled the amount of food waste collected in 2021 to over 15 million pounds.

Per the press release: The state of Maryland’s new law requiring large food waste generators to divert their food scraps has helped to drive over 50% growth in the number of commercial customers serviced, including apartment buildings, hotels, hospitals, grocery stores and schools. New commercial customers last year include Whole Foods Market, Hungry Harvest and the Maryland Zoo. Compost Crew also experienced significant growth with existing customers like MedStar Health and the George Washington University.


Gaithersburg

Hazel Monae comes to the City of Gaithersburg with more than 12 years of experience working in racial equity & leadership development.

City Manager Tanisha Briley announced the selection of Hazel Monae as the new Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) Program Manager  within the City Manager’s Office. Hazel will begin her role with the City on March 6, 2023, and will be introduced at the Mayor & City Council meeting that evening.


Gaithersburg

Brew House Kentlands at 325 Main Street in Gaithersburg will open this Saturday, March 4. Per its logo, it touts itself as being the “best coffee shop in Kentlands.” Brew House Kentlands is taking over the previous home of Clear Skies Meadery, which has opened its new meadery at 15201 Display Ct in Rockville. In addition to coffee, the menu also features beer, wine, and cocktails, as well as breakfast and lunch options. The full menu can be seen below.


Gaithersburg

Sardi’s Pollo A La Brasa at 430 N Frederick Ave in Gaithersburg has reopened following a February 2 after their fire in the restaurant’s ductwork that activated its sprinkler system. This incident occurred approximately two weeks before another issue with the exhaust system at the restaurant’s Olney location cause that restaurant to close for an evening.

We spoke with owner Phil Sardelis who let us know that the safety of the Sardi’s employees and customers is always his number one priority. “The exhaust system at every Sardi’s location is cleaned every two weeks and unfortunately the recent situations have been freak occurrences.” Sardelis told us. Insurance claims were not filed for the recent fires at both the Gaithersburg and Olney location as the ultimate goal has been to fix any potential issue and get the restaurants open again. All Sardi’s restaurants are now open.


Education

On Thursday, February 23, 2023 fifty-one student leaders from the Montgomery County Regional Student Government (MCR) and the Montgomery County Junior Council (MCJC), the countywide high school and middle school student government associations, traveled to Annapolis to meet with legislators that represent Montgomery County. The students researched upcoming legislation in the general assembly, wrote a one-pager on their advocacy centered around the legislation, and scheduled meetings with the legislators to advocate for these bills and share the student experiences and youth impact related to them. The topics of legislation they supported were:

MCDOT

Per MCDOT: Montgomery County teens have an opportunity to win some great prizes by producing videos to encourage peers not to allow cell phones to distract them while driving and walking. The County Department of Transportation’s “Heads Up, Phones Down” high school video contest.  High school students can be the writer, producer, director and the star in a 30-second Public Service Announcement (PSA) video. Videos should be 30 seconds about the importance of paying attention and not allowing phones to distract while walking, driving, or riding a bike.

Montgomery County public and private high school students can submit videos for the contest between March 1 and 31, 2023. Video entries can be submitted individually or as a group of up to four from the same school in English or Spanish.


Montgomery Planning

“The Council appreciates Cherri Branson, David Hill and Amy Presley for serving as temporary Planning Board members. Their work was essential to providing continuity of service and building a bridge to the new Planning Board. Additionally, we thank all those who applied to serve on the Planning Board and encourage residents to stay engaged and informed about land use and planning issues.”

In Oct. 2022, the Council appointed five temporary Planning Board members to ensure continuity of operations at the Montgomery County Planning Board and maintain services for residents. The three newly appointed Planning Board members will serve out the unexpired terms of the prior members and are registered voters of the same political party as the prior Planning Board members. Shawn Bartley will serve as the Republican member until June 14, 2024. Mitra Pedoeem will serve as the unaffiliated member until June 14, 2025. James Hedrick will serve as the Democratic member until June 14, 2026.


MoCo Government

The bill would establish the urban district to provide funding for, and support the work of, The Friendship Heights Alliance, a nonprofit organization that works on behalf of businesses and residents in Friendship Heights to further economic vitality and strengthen community in the area.  This legislation dovetails with legislation proposed by Washington, D.C. Ward 3 Councilmember Matthew Frumin to develop a Business Improvement District on the D.C. side of Friendship Heights. 

“The bi-jurisdictional Friendship Heights Alliance, strengthened as a D.C. BID and Maryland Urban District, will support a robust recovery for the Friendship Heights commercial district,” said D.C. Councilmember Frumin. “I look forward to partnering with the Montgomery County Council and the Friendship Heights Alliance to support the local business community along the Wisconsin Avenue Corridor.”
