In partnership with MCPS, Montgomery Goes Purple is hosting a Family Forum on Fentanyl and life-saving Narcan training from 9:30–11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Clarksburg High School. Panelists will share important information for families on the dangers and prevalence of fentanyl; prevention tools and protective factors for students, and resources for treatment when needed. This event will be a family discussion about what you need to know about this deadly drug, including Narcan training and distribution of Narcan kits to help reverse an overdose. The Community Opioid Prevention & Education (C.O.P.E.) trailer (a mock teen bedroom) will be available for tours to learn signs of substance use. There will also be a resource fair. Students can earn two Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for attending this event.

The event will be held in the cafeteria at Clarksburg, located at 22500 Wims Road in Clarksburg. RSVP to attend. In addition, be sure to tune in to a press conference set for 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19. MCPS leaders, county health and law enforcement leaders, and community partners will hold a news conference to raise awareness about the deadly trend of fentanyl use and accidental overdoses. Wes Moore Sworn in as Maryland’s 63rd Governor

Wes Moore was sworn in today as the 63rd governor of Maryland at a ceremony in Annapolis that included an introduction by legendary talk show host Oprah Winfrey. Moore is a native of Takoma Park, who grew up in the area until he was 6 years old, moving to New York after his father passed away. He returned to Maryland for college and attended Johns Hopkins University where he studied international relations and economics and graduated Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa in 2001.From 2017 to 2021 Moore served as the CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation– a charitable organization which attempts to alleviate problems caused by poverty in New York City. Moore is the first African American to be elected Governor of Maryland.

Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller was also sworn into office today. Miller is a former member of the Maryland House of Delegates, where she represented District 15 in Montgomery County and is the first South Asian woman to become lieutenant governor.

Montrose Alcohol Beverage Services Location to Reopen as ‘Oak Barrel & Vine’ Later This Month

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County’s Department of Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) will re-open its Montrose store under its upgraded retail concept, “Oak Barrel & Vine,” at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 27. The celebration and ribbon cutting will occur in front of the store, located at 1205-B Rockville Pike in the Montrose Crossing shopping center in Rockville. County Executive Marc Elrich, other elected officials and alcohol industry representatives plan to attend the opening.

The Oak Barrel & Vine branded stores feature handpicked items with a focus on spirits and local products. The upgraded store will have 25 percent more shelf space, a dedicated tasting area, queue lines for faster checkout and wayfinding signs for a more inviting shopping experience.

Update on Neal’s Bagels in the Kentlands

Construction is scheduled to begin later this week at the upcoming Neal’s Bagels in the Kentlands. Neal’s Bagels is relocating from its current location about a mile and a half away at 12141 Darnestown Rd in the Potomac Valley shopping center in Gaithersburg. The Jewish deli has been there for about 30 years, previously operating under the name Bagels Deluxe. The new shop will be located in the Kentlands paseo, next to Burtons and across from RanKen Noodle House.

The plan for the Kentlands location is to include indoor seating, as well as an outdoor patio where customers can enjoy their breakfast. Additions will include a grill that will allow the breakfast spot to add fresh-made eggs to breakfast sandwiches, omelets, pancakes, and waffles. The restaurant is hoping for a May 1st opening.

Victim’s Identity Released as Detectives Investigate West Gude Drive Fatality

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, in the area of West Gude Drive and Watkins Pond Blvd. in Rockville.

At approximately 2:29 p.m., Montgomery County Police Officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for the report of a single vehicle collision. The investigation by detectives has revealed that the driver of a silver 2018 Infiniti Q50 was traveling eastbound on West Gude Drive when he lost control and collided with a tree in the center median.

Update on Shake Shack in Kentlands

Permanent signage is now up at the upcoming Shake Shake location in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood. No opening date has been announced but we’re told the restaurant is expected to open in the first half of 2023. Shake Shack has additional MoCo locations at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda and Cabin John Village in Potomac.

Background: On July 8, 2021, Shake Shack was granted approval for the construction of a 4,700 square foot building with outdoor seating as the second of three commercial infill sites totaling 16,000 square feet along Kentlands Square Place. The burger chain was granted its license to sell beer and wine on the premises during its Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) hearing on January 6th of 2022, and prepared to break ground in February. Construction began in March, but stalled after flooding that occurred over the summer.

Montgomery College and MCPS to Host Financial Aid Virtual Event in Spanish on Thursday, Jan. 19

Montgomery College (MC) and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will host a virtual forum in Spanish at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19 for parents and students to learn more about how to get help paying for college.

This event is targeted to Spanish-speaking families who have questions about options available for high school graduates with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The virtual event will also discuss the Maryland Dream ACT (MDA) and will answer questions live and submitted in advance. Participants can submit their questions and register here.

Ten Montgomery County Restaurants Currently Participating in Winter Restaurant Week

Winter Restaurant Week runs from January 16 to January 22, with ten Montgomery County restaurants participating. Founding Farmers, J. Hollinger’s, Lia’s, all three Matchbox locations, Morton’s, Spanish Diner, The Daily Dish, and Dish & Dram will be the participating MoCo restaurants. Per the Metropolitan Restaurant Week website:

Rockville: Bulk Waste Collection Suspended Due to County Incinerator Issues

Due to issues with the solid waste incinerator at the Montgomery County Resource Recovery Facility in Dickerson, the City of Rockville will not be collecting bulk waste at this time. Household recycling and trash collections remain on their regular schedule.

Scheduled bulk refuse collections are suspended until the county-owned facility resumes operations. Visit www.montgomerycountymd.gov/sws for updates about the status of the county facility. Bulk waste collections are for large waste that does not fit into carts, such as a couch, desk, sink, door, or cabinet up to 499 pounds. Scheduled bulk metal and bulk yard waste collections will be made as scheduled. For information about scheduling a bulk metal or bulk yard waste collection, visit www.rockvillemd.gov/recycling-trash.
