Beyond MoCo

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch seek the public’s assistance in identifying and locating a suspect in reference to a homicide that occurred on Thursday, August 25, 2022, in the 800 block of 7th Street, Northwest.

At approximately 8:16 pm, members of the First District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, the members located an adult male victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead.


Gaithersburg

Per WSSC: Crews are working as quickly as possible to shutdown a broken 24” water main in the 11500 blk of Clopper Rd in Gaithersburg. “We appreciate your patience. It does take time to close valves on a large main and get the water off.”

6:45pm: “We have crews out right now working to close valves and shut off the flow of water. Once the water is off we will determine what type of repairs are needed. We appreciate your patience.”


MoCo Government

The Climate Action Plan (CAP) is a strategic plan to cut community-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 80 percent by 2027 and 100 percent by 2035, compared to 2005 levels. The plan also seeks to reduce climate-related risks to the County’s residents, businesses and the built and natural environment.

During the first year of CAP implementation, County departments and agencies actively worked on 75 climate actions out of the 86 actions identified in the CAP. In FY23, County departments and agencies intend to make progress on 77 climate actions.


MCDOT

“Ridership data and on-time performance are monitored regularly, and this service change focuses on raising reliability,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. “Overall, service levels will remain within one percent of where we were. Most of our over 80 routes will not experience changes.”

North Bethesda

In July we let you know that Planet Fitness will be opening a new location at 5520 Randolph Rd in Rockville (Montrose Shopping Center) in the space that was formerly occupied by Gold’s Gym. Though an opening date has not yet been set, we were told today that the current Rockville location at 1776 E Jefferson St in Federal Plaza will close when the new location opens. The new location is currently under construction.

Planet Fitness currently has MoCo locations in Germantown, Rockville, and two in Silver Spring. In June, Planet Fitness at 255 Muddy Branch Rd in Gaithersburg  announced it would no longer be open 24 hours, seven days a week.  The gym now closes on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights at 9pm and reopens the following morning.  The other MoCo locations will remain 24-7 according to a representative at the Gaithersburg gym.

The exciting parade traditionally kicks off the holiday season in the Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District. The parade steps off from Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street and proceeds south on Georgia Avenue, ending at Silver Spring Avenue. It annually attracts thousands for spectators.


Beyond MoCo

Prince George’s County Public Schools has announced it will be moving to a mask-optional policy beginning Tuesday, September 6. PGCPS announced earlier this month that the school district would return to a “mandatory mask policy in all schools and facilities until further notice, effective Monday, August 15,” saying that the decision was recommended by the Prince George’s County Health Department. Montgomery County Public Schools ended its indoor mask requirement on March 8.


Crime

Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland: MS-13 gang member, Jilmer Hernandez-Alvarado, a/k/a “Toro”, age 27, most recently of Hyattsville, Maryland, pleaded guilty yesterday to conspiracy to extort business owners.   

The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron; Special Agent in Charge Wayne Jacobs of the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Washington Field Office Criminal Division; Chief Malik Aziz of the Prince George’s County Police Department; and Chief Marcus Jones of the Montgomery County Police Department.


Gaithersburg

Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a vehicle collision that occurred on the afternoon of Monday, August 29, 2022, in the 400 block of Orchard Ridge Dr. in Gaithersburg.

At approximately 2:48 p.m., Montgomery County and Gaithersburg Police officers along with Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for a traffic collision involving a vehicle that crashed into two townhomes.


Bethesda

Several Montgomery County theaters will offer $3 tickets this Saturday, September 3 as a part of National Cinema Day.
