Annual Farm Tour & Harvest Sale Returns on Saturday, July 23, and Sunday, July 24, to Highlight the Best of Montgomery’s Agricultural Reserve

The 30th Anniversary of the self-driving Farm Tour and Harvest Sale was celebrated in 2019, but the Montgomery Office of Agriculture’s informal tour was not held in the past two years due to the COVID-19 health crisis. The tour is back with 20 farms open to the public. The Farm Tour brochure can be viewed at brochure front (montgomerycountymd.gov). For more information, call 301-590-2823.

Several farms are open for “pick your own” opportunities. Some will be selling fruits, vegetables or meats. Refreshments will be available at other stops. Eight locations will have animals that can be viewed up close. Montgomery County’s emerging brewing and vineyard industries will be found at seven stops.

Hans Riemer Concedes County Executive Democratic Primary; David Blair Narrowly Leads Marc Elrich With Mail-In/Provisional Ballots Not Yet Counted

Hans Riemer has officially conceded in the still-to-be determined Democratic primary for Montgomery County Exefutive. Riemer received 14,911 (20.4%) votes, coming in third behind David Blair (28,961, 39.63%) and incumbent Marc Elrich (27,770, 38%) with all 258 Election Day precincts reporting. The mail-in and provisional ballots still have to be counted. Riemer’s message can be seen below:

Lazzaro’s confirmed its closing on Sunday morning when owner Larry Lazarro wrote the following in response to a post on the Support MoCo FB page: “Thank you for all you and everyone has done on this page. Business was great and so was the feedback. It was a personal family health matter. But this is not the end I’m looking to move into a brick/ mortar. This place fell into my lap. Goin into the mall was never my first choice. lol Thank you to everyone we’ll miss seeing your beautiful faces every day! We love you and appreciate what everyone has done for us in this group! And the family is doing fine now.” The restaurant featured imported cold cuts that are cut fresh daily, homemade meatballs, cannolis, and more. Owner Larry Lazzaro told us his family owned Lucia’s Deli on University Blvd in Wheaton back in the 80’s. The business was eventually sold and the company became what is now Mamma Lucia.

The menu consists of the best selling sausages and sides from their DC location, as well as boozy milkshakes and a funnel cake bar. HalfSmokes sister restaurant Butter Me Up opened its Montgomery Mall location last week. Butter Me Up is located in the old Aroma Espresso Bar location, which is downstairs near the Old Navy entrance and features “instagrammable” decor, will offer a menu that consists of a variety of breakfast sandwiches, toasts, sides, bowls, smoothies, and juices.

Health Officials from the County Department of Health and Human Services to Offer Monkeypox Vaccine to Limited Number of At-Risk Residents

Residents who are identified by public health officials as close contacts of current monkeypox cases will be offered vaccination. Public health staff from the County’s sexual health programs will be working with community-based non-profit organizations to identify residents who could be at risk and are contacting them directly to offer an opportunity to be vaccinated. As vaccine supply increases, additional residents who are at-risk will be identified and offered vaccination.

With 246 of 258 election day precincts reporting, David Blair (28,961, 39.63%) holds a slight lead over incumbent Marc Elrich (27,770, 38.00%) in the Montgomery County Executive Democratic primary. Hans Riemer is currently in third (14,911, 20.40%) and Peter James in fourth (1,445, 1.98%). Reardon Sullivan (6,840, 63.58%) leads the Republican primary over Shelly Skolnick (4,949, 36.42%). Mail-In/Provisional Ballots still also have to be counted.

Update: Man Shot and Killed by Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy in Gaithersburg

A man was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy this morning in Gaithersburg after allegedly waving a large knife at the deputy. The incident occurred around 9:20AM on Garth Terrace off of Watkins Mill Road and Travis Lane. According to a report by NBC Washington, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, which included Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies, were attempting to serve a warrant to the individual before he was shot. The warrant was for failing to appear in court for charges involving a 2020 home invasion.

A bystander that was at the scene attempting to help defuse the situation was also shot in the leg and suffered superficial wounds. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said the man killed was 35 years old and his identity has not yet been released. The FBI is currently handling the investigation due to the involvement of U.S. Marshals. According to the report, Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force officers do not wear body cameras.

MoCo Rapper ‘Joony’ Makes His First Appearance on Billboard’s Hot 100

Billboard congratulated Montgomery County native ‘Joony’ via social media for the rapper’s first appearance on the Hot 100 this week. Joony, who is from Silver Spring and attended Springbrook High School, entered the list after being featured on Brent Faiyaz’s “FYTB.” The Billboard Hot 100 features the week’s most popular artists across all genres.

Faiyaz is from Columbia in neighboring Howard County, and rose to prominence after he was featured on the GoldLink single “Crew” alongside another local rapper, Shy Glizzy, in 2016. The song was certified 5× Platinum by the RIAA, and earned him a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

Miller’s Ale House to Close in September After a Decade in Rockville

A manager at the restaurant was able to confirm that Miller’s Ale House will be closing permanently in August (the date has since been updated to September 25th) after approximately 10 years at 1471 Rockville Pike in Rockville. The location was previously home to Hooters before it moved across the Pike (and later closed) and Shakey’s before that. Miller’s Ale House is a Florida-based American restaurant and sports bar chain that was founded in 1988. The restaurant serves steaks, chicken, burgers, salads, seafood, and more. Though most of their locations are in Florida (over 50), there are over 30 other locations open across the east coast. Miller’s Ale House has nearby locations in Hyattsville and Sterling, VA locations.

Maxwell Uy Leads Robert Bass in MoCo Sheriff’s Race

With 246 of 258 Election Day precincts reporting, Maxwell Uy leads Robert Bass in the race to become Montgomery County Sheriff. As of 1:57pm on Wednesday, Uy had 20,654 (53.52%) votes compared to 18,332 (46.48%) for Bass. The winner will take over for outgoing Sheriff Darren Popkin, who has served in the position since 2010 and announced last year that he will not seek re-election. Prior to his election on November 2, 2010 and re-election in 2014, Sheriff Popkin was the Chief Deputy, second-in-command of the Sheriff’s Office for twelve years.

Uy currently serves as Chief Deputy Sheriff for Montgomery County, in charge of the day to day operations of the Sheriff’s office on behalf of Sheriff Darren Popkin. Per his campaign website, he “worked his way up the ladder after gaining experience in the Criminal Section, Domestic Violence Section (both as a Deputy and supervising Sergeant), and Court & Transportation Section. His experience extends further as a former Montgomery County Public Safety Academy Sergeant and Training Coordinator cooperating with the Montgomery County Police Department.”

Rockville City Police Makes Attempted Murder Arrest in Town Center Shooting

Rockville City Police Detectives have arrested and charged a man with attempted first-degree murder. On July 15, 2022 at 1:45 a.m. officers responded to the 100 block of Gibbs Street for the report of a fight in progress, which was then updated to a shooting. Responding officers located an adult male victim shot three times, he was transported to an area hospital where he continues to recover from his non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation has revealed that a verbal dispute took place between the suspect and the victim, who are known acquaintances of each other. The verbal dispute escalated into a physical fight, the suspect took out a handgun and fired it several times striking the victim. The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.
