Bangkok Garden announced the loss of longtime owner/employee Ricky Laohapant on Wednesday. Ricky was the owner and operator of longtime Bethesda restaurant Bangkok Garden, which closed permanently last August.
Bangkok Garden opened its Rockville location in 2019. The full statement on Ricky’s passing can be seen below. Our condolences go out to his friends and family.
Brookside Gardens announced today that its “Wings of Fancy” indoor butterfly exhibition has been cancelled for 2022 due to concerns about the pandemic.
When asked why the event was cancelled, given Montgomery County’s current COVID-19 case rate, Montgomery Parks said, “the exhibition is planned six months in advance. Given the information available at the time, we decided that safety of visitors, volunteers, and staff took priority.”

Amazon announced on Wednesday that it plans to close all 68 of its brick-and-mortar bookstores, pop-ups and shops carrying toys and home goods (including Amazon 4 Star) in the United States and United Kingdom, per Reuters. Amazon has an Amazon 4 Star location in Montgomery Mall in Bethesda and one that was planned for Germantown, with signage at that location recently going up. A call to the Bethesda Amazon 4 Star location led to a message stating the store was temporarily closed until tomorrow. The Germantown location is no longer going to open.
Amazon also has an Amazon Books location in Bethesda, which is closed on Wednesdays. Exact dates for closures will vary by location, and Amazon stated it would help affected employees find roles elsewhere in the company. We will have closing dates for all Montgomery County location as soon as they are available. The company also stated that it would continue its focus on Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market grocery chains. An Amazon Fresh grocery store recently opened in Chevy Chase and one is planned for Gaithersburg. It was recently announced that an Amazon grocery store is in the plans for White Oak Town Center as well.

WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, will be closing a portion of Sligo Creek Parkway to vehicles and the trail to pedestrians and bicyclists from Carroll Avenue to Jackson Avenue beginning on Monday, March 7, 2022.
Trail construction will address drainage improvements to mitigate flooding on the trail. Construction is anticipated to take approximately one month to complete. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to access Sligo Creek Parkway during the closure.

By a unanimous vote, the Montgomery County Board of Education tentatively adopted a $2.96 billion operating budget request for Fiscal Year (FY) 2023. The budget, which represents a $179.6 million increase in spending—about 6.5 percent—that the district needs to provide critical direct academic, safety and social-emotional supports to students, while managing ongoing operational, salary and benefit costs.

The last remaining Quizno’s in MoCo has closed. The restaurant, which was located at 1611 E Gude Dr, was cleared out earlier this week and is now listed as “closed permanently” by Google. The phone number for the location is not in working order.
Back in April of 2021, the Bethesda location closed. It was the second to last remaining Quizno’s in the county.
Last July we let you know that BurgerFi, an American fast casual restaurant chain focused on hormone-free and antibiotic-free angus hamburgers, french fries, hot dogs, custard, and more, would be coming to Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg.
The restaurant will be opening at 5 Grand Corner Ave, across from Dick’s Sporting Goods and next to Lanzhou Hand Pull Noodles. Signage is now up and construction has progressed as the restaurant gears up for its opening. While an opening date has not yet been provided, we can see it opening this spring.
During yesterday’s Montgomery County Council meeting, the council passed Bill 1-22, which will require all food service facilities in Montgomery County that offer a children’s meal to also offer at least one healthy children’s meal and beverage option. The bill was introduced by Councilmember Craig Rice and co-sponsored by Council President Gabe Albornoz and Councilmembers Will Jawando and Nancy Navarro.
The bill was enacted by a vote of 8-1, with Councilmember Friedson voting against the legislation.
