C-SPAN has announced the 2025 winners of its 21st annual StudentCam competition, recognizing students from Silver Spring, Bethesda, Potomac, Germantown, Rockville, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Dermott Foley of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring won the grand prize for his documentary on fentanyl overdose, while other students received second, third, and honorable mention prizes for topics such as affordable housing, climate change, and healthcare policies. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has named 10 Montgomery College students among 467 semifinalists nationwide for its Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, selected from over 1,600 applicants across 212 community colleges. The scholarship provides financial aid, academic advising, and career support to high-achieving community college students with financial need as they transfer to four-year institutions.
Eater DC has compiled a list of the “Most Exciting D.C. Restaurant Openings to Look Forward to This Spring”, which includes two restaurants in Maryland (both in Montgomery County).
Picanteria El Picaron is now open at 2417 University Blvd West in Wheaton. The restaurant is located in the space previously occupied by Wong Gee, which closed in January.

ICE Baltimore announced that it arrested Wilmer Antonio Echenique-Navarro, who was referred to as a “Venezuelan alien & Tren de Aragua gang member” on March 18. ICE noted that “@PGCorrections failed to honor ICE detainer & released him, putting MD residents at risk. He remains in ICE custody.” about a year after his arrest for a murder in an unincorporated section of Takoma Park.
