Washington Football Team Staffer Tests Positive for Omicron Variant of Covid-19

by MCS Staff

Updated to include 9 additional Washington players that are on the list.

The NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero has reported that a Tier 3 staffer with the Washington Football Team has tested positive for the Onicron variant of Covid-19. This is the first known case of the variant in the NFL.

36 players went on the NFL’s Covid-19 list today due to positive tests– the highest number since that list was created in 2020. The list now includes 9 players from the Washington Football Team.

This comes on the heels of the team losing its two starting defensive ends as well as a starter coming off of injured reserve in the week leading up to this past Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Tier 3 staff consist of certain operational personnel, in-house media and broadcast personnel, field manager, transportation providers and individuals who perform essential facility, stadium or event services but do not require close contact with Tier 1 individuals. Team and other personnel who work
exclusively in areas of team facilities that are or will be
completely cordoned off from the rest of the facility do
not need to be credentialed in one of the three access
tiers.

Per Pelissero,  “Tier 3 staffers are not allowed around players. Positive cases in the NFL generally track with positive cases across the country. The league works with labs to conduct genomic sequencing and tests asymptomatic, fully vaccinated individuals weekly for monitoring purposes.”
