$3 Million in Jewelry Stolen From Home in Urbana; Suspects Arrested

Per the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office: On Aug. 18, 2023, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) deputies responded to a call for service of a residential burglary in the Urbana area of Frederick County, Maryland. FCSO detectives discovered that, during the burglary, suspects stole approximately $3 million in jewelry from the victim’s home.

Through a thorough investigation, FCSO Detective Josh Stears and members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Baltimore were able to identify two suspects who reside in Las Vegas and had traveled to Frederick during the time of the burglary.

Frederick Man Receives Successful Pig Heart Transplant at the University of Maryland Medical Center

Per the University of Maryland Medical Center: “A 58-year-old patient with terminal heart disease became the second patient in the world to receive a successful transplant of a genetically-modified pig heart on September 20. He is recovering well and communicating with his loved ones. This is only the second time in the world that a genetically modified pig heart has been transplanted into a living patient. Both historic surgeries were performed by University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) faculty at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).

The first historic surgery, performed in January, 2022, was conducted on David Bennett by University of Maryland Medicine surgeons (comprising UMSOM and UMMC), who are recognized as the leaders in cardiac xenotransplantation. This new patient, Lawrence Faucette, had end-stage heart disease. He was deemed ineligible for a traditional transplant with a human heart, by UMMC and several other leading transplant hospitals, due to his pre-existing peripheral vascular disease and complications with internal bleeding.

The Great Frederick County Fair Begins September 15; Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, and Tracy Byrd to Perform Concerts

The Great Frederick Fair begins September 15 at the Frederick Fairgrounds (797 E Patrick St) and will run through September 23. Entry to the fair is $10 and children 10 and under get in free. Special events include tractor pulls and a demolition derby. On Friday, Gin Blossoms, Sugar Ray, Tonic & Fastball will be performing. Zach Williams, Elle King, Tracy Byrd, and Walker Hayes also have concerts scheduled. Last year’s fair featured one of the last performances by Coolio, who passed away on September 28, 2022.

TMZ reports that rapper Coolio has passed away. The video shows one of his last performances at the Frederick State Fair last Thursday, 9/22. RIP, Coolio.

Maryland State Trooper Rescues Woman Who Was Trapped In A Burning Vehicle In Frederick County

Per the Maryland State Police: The quick response by Maryland State Police helped save the life of a woman after her vehicle caught fire this afternoon in Frederick County. Shortly after 12 p.m. this afternoon, Sergeant Brian Blubaugh assigned to the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, working out of the New Market Scale House and President of the Maryland Troopers Association, was the first to arrive on the scene following a single-vehicle crash on westbound I-70 at mile marker 49 in Frederick County. According to a preliminary investigation, a Ford van, operated by a 69-year-old woman from Pennsylvania, was traveling westbound on I-70 when for unknown reasons, traveled off of the roadway and struck an embankment when the vehicle began to catch fire.

Sergeant Blubaugh, along with multiple citizens, helped extract the woman from the burning vehicle, ultimately saving her life. The driver was transported by ground to Meritus Hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland for treatment of her injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Beyond MoCo: Urbana VFD Carnival This Week

The Urbana Volunteer Fire Department’s 49th Community Carnival is open nightly this week through Sunday, July 23.

The event is tailored towards fun for the whole family. Admission and parking are free, and the doors open every evening this week at 5:30, with rides opening at 6:00. There are a variety of carnival games throughout the midway. This year, there will be free nightly live music and fireworks at 10:00 PM Thursday night. A Blackstone 36″ Griddle is being raffled off, with the raffle drawing Sunday night. Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, unlimited ride tickets are available for $20.

Local Restaurant, Starvin Marvin, Making Waves With Its “Mambo Sauce”

Starvin Marvin opened in Gaithersburg opened in 1982 and was bought by the Foundas family in 1987. In 1990 the family opened a location in Wheaton that only lasted a few years. In 2009, a Frederick location opened and the Gaithersburg store was sold to two brothers who were longtime employees and wanted something of their own. Those early days at the Gaithersburg store in the 90s, however, were the inspiration for Starvin Marvin Mambo Sauce– the restaurant’s version of “mumbo sauce”, the red/orange tangy sauce made popular in D.C. area takeout spots for decades.

“Mambo was something we experimented with from time time in the 90’s because our Gaithersburg customers would ask for it, but it was actually in Frederick where our Mambo Sauce (found in the grocery stores today) began to come together.” Dino Foundas told us. “We worked with some of our dear employees to perfect the recipe that we’ve started to include in a lot of our dishes” (photos below).

Montgomery County Resident Killed in Collision Sunday Morning in Frederick County

Per the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office: At approximately 8:35 a.m. today, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) and the Frederick County (MD) Fire & Rescue (DFRS) responded to a single vehicle crash at the Union Bridge Quarry located off Peter Shriner and Clemonsville Roads, in Union Bridge, Maryland. Upon arriving on scene, first responders found three adults, one male and two females, deceased.

Initial indications show that the 2022 Dodge Charger was traveling at a high rate of speed, left the roadway, and plummeted into the bottom of the dry quarry, owned and operated by Heidelberg Materials. First responders found one female ejected from the vehicle and the other female and male were still inside the heavily damaged vehicle. Those killed in the vehicle crash include:

Frederick’s Flying Dog Brewery is being sold to Utica, New York-based FX Matt Brewing Co. According to a report by BrewBound, Flying Dog/FX Matt will begin shifting production from Frederick to New York this summer, but will “maintain a presence in Maryland as FX Matt is seeking a location for an innovation brewery and taproom in Frederick.” Flying Dog was founded in Aspen, Colorado in 1990 and moved production to Maryland full-time in 2007 after purchasing the Frederick Brewing Company in 2006. Flying Dog is known for brewing innovative, high-alcohol beers with sometimes controversial label art-work by Ralph Steadman.

“It is important to me that FX Matt Brewing is oﬀering employment opportunities to as many employees as possible and we will provide job placement assistance to team members”, says Flying Dog CEO Jim Caruso. “Frederick is a great place to live and do business, unfortunately even though we have invested millions of dollars in the brewery, it has too many limitations and puts Flying Dog at too great a competitive disadvantage.

According to the Frederick Police Department (FPD), there have been several sightings of a small black bear in the city of Frederick. FDP posted the following message on Facebook:

“🚨🐻Please be advised: We have received several reports regarding sightings of a small bear in our area. Please be aware that FPD is fully aware of the bear sightings, and we are actively monitoring the situation. To ensure everyone’s safety, we kindly request that you do not approach the bear if you happen to encounter it. Bears are wild animals and unpredictable, especially when they feel threatened or cornered. Please stay tuned for any updates or instructions from FPD regarding this matter. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we navigate this situation.”

Derwood Man Wanted for First-Degree Attempted Murder Arrested After Pursuit

Per MCPD: A Derwood man is in custody, following a pursuit that led officers through Montgomery and Frederick County. 22-year-old Johnny Franklin Dove, Jr. was wanted for first-degree attempted murder in connection with a violent domestic assault that occurred on Sunday, April 9, 2023. Montgomery County Department of Police detectives filed for a warrant on Monday, April 10, charging Dove with Attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, felony use of a firearm during a violent crime, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

Detectives located Dove in Clarksburg and attempted a traffic stop. Dove led police on a pursuit into Frederick County and Frederick City. Maryland State Police, Frederick City Police, and Frederick County Sheriff’s deputies assisted Montgomery County in the attempt to apprehend Dove.
