Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland:– Adam Michael Nettina, age 34, of West Friendship, Maryland, pleaded guilty today to using the telephone to threaten a group that advocates for LGBTQI+ people.  As part of his plea agreement, Nettina also admitted sending messages to Maryland and Virginia state delegates due to their statements in support of transgender people.

“You have the right to your own opinions, but you don’t have the right to threaten the lives of those who disagree with you,” said United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, Erek L. Barron.  “We’ll continue prosecuting these threats to the fullest extent of the law.”


Per the Maryland State Police: Maryland State Police arrested a man on impaired driving charges after a crash in which a state trooper was injured this morning in Washington County. The suspect, Chauncey Dale Baylor II, 30, of Hagerstown, Maryland is charged with impaired driving. He was transported to the Maryland State Police Hagerstown Barrack for processing before being released. Additional charges are pending in the case.

At about 2:45 a.m., Corporal Kevin Mowers, who is assigned to the Hagerstown Barrack, was traveling west on Interstate 70, east of Route 66 in his marked departmental vehicle. According to a preliminary investigation, Corporal Mowers’s vehicle was struck by a silver 2013 Chrysler 300, driven by Baylor.Corporal Mowers was flown by MSP Aviation Command, Trooper 3, to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment of his injuries. Baylor was arrested at the scene. All lanes of westbound I-70 prior to Route 66 were closed temporarily for reconstruction of the crash.  The crash remains under investigation.


Per the State of Maryland: Today, Governor Wes Moore and Federal Communications Commission Chair Jessica Rosenworcel joined Marylanders during a free “train the trainer” Affordable Connectivity Program training session at Salisbury University. The latest ‘More Opportunity Tour’ stop highlighted the mission to ensure that all households can afford broadband services and to support the governor’s goal of getting every Marylander online by the end of his first term in office.

“Today, we celebrate the partnership that is needed to bridge the digital divide,” said Gov. Moore. “Broadband infrastructure means nothing if you can’t afford to connect to the internet. The Affordable Connectivity Program provides discounts that help tear down the cost barrier standing between Marylanders and internet access. Connectivity is no longe​r optional, and with programs like the Affordable Connectivity Program, we will create internet access for all.”


Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland– U.S. District Judge Stephanie A. Gallagher today sentenced Clayton Alexander McCoy, age 32, of Chesterland, Ohio, to 262 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for transporting explosives with intent to injure and to possession of an unregistered firearm/explosive device, in connection with an explosion at a home in Carroll County, Maryland.  A resident of the home was the boyfriend of a woman in whom McCoy had a romantic interest.  Judge Gallagher also ordered that McCoy pay restitution in the full amount of the loss, which is at least $96,378.38.

According to his guilty plea and court documents, McCoy built a bomb in his home in Ohio, then drove the bomb to Victim 1’s home in Carroll County, Maryland, intending to kill the victim.  McCoy knew the victim and a woman, who was Victim 1’s girlfriend, for a number of years through a live action role-playing battle game/social club.  In October 2020 McCoy expressed romantic feelings for the woman, who informed McCoy that she was in a relationship with Victim 1 and did not share McCoy’s romantic feelings.


1:44pm Update: MPD’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Squad conducted a precautionary sweep of the zoo and found no hazardous materials.

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo (3001 Connecticut Avenue NW DC) is being evacuated due to a bomb threat. According to FOX5, “Authorities say a reported bomb threat was received around 11:13 a.m. Tuesday morning. Visitors and staff have been asked to evacuate the zoo.”


Authorities responded to the scene of a man who was found unresponsive in the water in Carolina Beach, North Carolina, the town announced Monday morning. Life saving measures were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead. The man was identified as Germantown, MD resident, Steven Samuel Lehner (age 59). “CAROLINA BEACH, NC, August 28th, 2023 at 11:54 a.m.- The Carolina Beach Police Department, Carolina Beach Fire Department and New Hanover County EMS were dispatched to the beach strand in the area of Seagull Ln., in reference to a subject found unresponsive in the water.


Metro is marking the first day of school for D.C. public school students with a new effort to help ensure a safe and stress-free trip to and from school. Starting today, students will see ‘Kids Ride Free’ signage directing them to use specific faregates at Metrorail stations most used by school children. Station Managers will be on hand to help students who may have issues with their Kids Ride Free SmarTrip cards. If a student does not have their card, the Station Manager will tap the student through the faregates and take note of the student’s school to give the D.C Public School System data to help ensure cards are distributed.

Students are reminded that their Kids Ride Free card from last school year will work until the end of September to allow time for distribution of this year’s cards. Metro has begun working with the District to make Kids Ride Free cards available in mobile wallets in the future to give give students with smartphones a convenient way to get to school without the risk of losing their physical cards. Per the Maryland State Police: The quick response by Maryland State Police helped save the life of a woman after her vehicle caught fire this afternoon in Frederick County. Shortly after 12 p.m. this afternoon, Sergeant Brian Blubaugh assigned to the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, working out of the New Market Scale House and President of the Maryland Troopers Association, was the first to arrive on the scene following a single-vehicle crash on westbound I-70 at mile marker 49 in Frederick County. According to a preliminary investigation, a Ford van, operated by a 69-year-old woman from Pennsylvania, was traveling westbound on I-70 when for unknown reasons, traveled off of the roadway and struck an embankment when the vehicle began to catch fire.

Sergeant Blubaugh, along with multiple citizens, helped extract the woman from the burning vehicle, ultimately saving her life. The driver was transported by ground to Meritus Hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland for treatment of her injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation.


Metro is accelerating the escalator replacement work at Tenleytown-AU Station and will replace the two east entrance escalators with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable.  Starting Monday, August 28, 2023, the entrance on the east side of Wisconsin Avenue, closest to 40th Street, will close for approximately four months. By closing the east entrance, construction crews can work on both escalators at the same time, increasing project efficiency and reducing the overall project duration by roughly two months.

During the entrance closure, construction crews will also continue to replace the final escalator that runs from the intermediate level to the mezzanine. Metro began construction to replace four entrance escalators and three internal escalators at this station in August 2021. To date, four escalators have been replaced at the station, including the two escalators at the west entrance. All escalator replacement work at Tenleytown-AU will be complete when the east entrance reopens in late December. Customer Impacts:


The Original Steaks and Hoagies will open its first Maryland location this weekend at 10450 Owings Mills Blvd in Owings Mills. The Ohio-based franchise offers specialty cheesesteaks like “The Hangover,” with hot sauce, fried egg, bacon, onions, hot peppers, and cheese whiz, and the “Black And Blue,” with Cajun seasoning, mushrooms, and blue cheese cream.  In addition to to hoagies/cheesesteaks, menu items include wings, salads, fried pickles, and pretzels. According to a report by Baltimore’s ABC2, the chain plans on opening five restaurants in Maryland, with Columbia and College Park mentioned as possible locations.
