Beyond MoCo: Five-Year-Old Girl Locked in Hot Car For Several Hours; Mother Arrested

We learned the child had been inside the car for several hours while her mother was visiting at a home nearby. The 29-year-old mother from Glen Burnie, MD, will be criminally charged with Neglect of a Minor, Unattended Child Left Confined in a Vehicle and Reckless Endangerment.

Child Protective Services has been notified, per Maryland law, to investigate and determine if the family can benefit from other services. It’s never ok to leave a young child unattended but it is particularly dangerous to do so in a vehicle when there is a heat advisory. Even with a window partially down, temperatures rise quickly and can become deadly. Children, dependent adults and even pets should simply never be left alone in a vehicle during extreme temperatures. We’re heartened that someone saw something and said something and are thankful for a community that looks out for each other!”

Mosquitos Infected With West Nile Virus Found in Maryland

Mosquitos infected with West Nile Virus were trapped in Maryland– in two parts of Anne Arundel County on July 11, authorities said, and some were also found in the Bowie area of Prince George’s County. So far, no human cases have been reported. “For most people that get West Nile, they have zero symptoms. No symptoms at all,” said Johns Hopkins University senior scholar and physician Dr. Amesh Adalja (per FOX 5).

In response, the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA), in cooperation with the Prince George’s County and Anne Arundel County Health Departments, expanded mosquito control services in areas due to a public health concern over the potential for mosquito-borne diseases. While not all mosquitoes carry diseases, MDA  suggests that residents take precautions to minimize their exposure to mosquito bites. These measures include:

Commanders Back to DC? New Legislation Creates Path That Could Make it Happen

House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) introduced the D.C. Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act, bipartisan legislation that transfers administrative jurisdiction over the RFK stadium site from the Secretary of the Interior to the Administrator of the General Services Administration (GSA). The bill will allow GSA to enter into a lease with the District of Columbia, under which D.C. may use the land for stadium redevelopment, commercial and residential development, or other public purposes.

“The House Oversight Committee remains committed to working with Washington, D.C. officials to ensure a capital that is prosperous for residents and visitors for generations to come. After discussing city initiatives with D.C. Mayor Bowser and other local stakeholders, it has become clear that addressing the deteriorating conditions at the RFK Memorial stadium site is a top economic priority for the city,” said Chairman James Comer. “I’m proud to introduce the bipartisan D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act, which is long overdue legislation that will provide D.C. leaders the opportunity to revitalize the RFK stadium site. Hyundai Installing Free Anti-theft Software Upgrade at Mobile Service Center in DC in Response to Thefts Targeting The Brand

Hyundai has introduced a mobile service center to drive further installations of free anti-theft software from July 27-31, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. EDT at Parking Lot 8 (Zone 1) and Lot 8A of RFK Stadium (2400 Independence Ave SE, Washington, D.C. 20003). No Appointments Necessary For Customers Of Eligible, Affected Vehicles (you do not have to be a DC resident to bring your car in).

In response to persistent thefts targeting certain Hyundai vehicles without push-button ignitions and immobilizing anti-theft devices, Hyundai Motor America is collaborating with Mayor Muriel Bowser and acting Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith to provide a mobile service center at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. from July 27-31. The mobile clinic is intended to complement Hyundai’s nationwide network of dealerships and drive further installations of Hyundai’s free anti-theft software upgrade for customers who continue to be affected by the thefts. Specially trained mobile service technicians will be on-site to install and complete the software upgrade, which should take less than an hour.

Montgomery County Resident Wins $50,000; Plans to Use Money Towards New Home

The Silver Spring winner signed the back of his ticket, made an appointment and claimed the $50,000 prize this week. He shared with Lottery officials that he has been saving up to purchase a home. He is one step closer, thanks to the big win.

The Prince George’s County retailer, Route 1 Liquors located at 10500 Baltimore Avenue, is a winner, too. The business will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize winning scratch-off worth $50,000. The $50,000 Cash instant ticket went on sale in December 2022 with 160 $50,000 top prizes; there are 98 top prizes remaining along with others that range from $20 to $5,000. Gordon Ramsay’s Street Pizza Will Open First U.S. Location in DC

Gordon Ramsay has already opened two restaurants at the Wharf, with his Fish & Chips and Hell’s Kitchen concepts opening within the last year. Last year, he also announced the impending arrival of the his Street Pizza concept– with plans for The Wharf in DC to be the home of the restaurant’s first United States location. BizJournals reports that permits have finally been obtained to move forward with the project.

Per the report, the all-you-can-eat pizza restaurant will move into a location that is “7,100 square feet across two floors and two tenant spaces at 501-507 Seventh St. NW, a block south of Capital One Arena and across the street from José Andrés’ Jaleo.” The restaurant will have over 200 seats and the “layout suggests each level will have its own bar, pool table, lounge, kitchen and dining area.”

Murder Fugitive Extradited from Mexico Scheduled for First Appearance Inside Montgomery County Courtroom

After twelve years on the run, murder fugitive Jorge Rueda Landeros was arrested in Mexico and charged in connection to the 2010 murder of Sue Marcum, of Bethesda. In December 2022, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) – Baltimore Field Office received information that Rueda Landeros was likely living in Guadalajara, Jalisco. The FBI – Baltimore Field Office coordinated with Mexican authorities to extradite Rueda Landeros. He was returned to Montgomery County on Tuesday, July 26 and is scheduled to appear in a Rockville courtroom later this afternoon.

At first, it appeared the case was a robbery as Marcum was found dead in the basement of her home. Later, it was reportedly discovered that Landeros was the beneficiary of Marcum’s $500,000 life insurance policy, which police believed played a role in the murder. DNA that did not belong to Marcum was also found on the murder weapon. Investigators discovered Landeros, who was in Mexico and communicating with police through email, would occasionally cross the border to visit family. Montgomery County Police detectives requested that border patrol stop Landeros on his next trip to Texas and take a DNA sample from him. That sample matched DNA found on the murder weapon in Marcum’s home and Landeros was charged with first-degree murder the next say.

$1 Million and $40,000 Winning Mega Millions Tickets Sold in Maryland; Friday’s Jackpot Now at $910 Million

Maryland had several big winners for last night’s Mega Millions lottery drawing. A $1 million ticket was sold at Pine Liquors (9231 Oxon Hill Road) in Prince George’s County and a $40,000 Mega Millions Megaplier ticket was sold at Giant (8100 Loch Raven Boulevard) in Towson.  Last night’s winning numbers were 3, 5, 6, 44 and 61. The Mega Ball number was 25 and the optional Megaplier number was X4. This Friday’s drawing now has an estimated jackpot of $910 million, with a $464.2 cash option.  Additional details below:

“The last Mega Millions® jackpot offered in July will be a massive one, as the estimated prize for the next drawing on Friday, July 28, is a whopping $910 million ($464.2 million cash). Maryland Black Bear Hunt Lottery Has Opened for 2023 Season

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is now accepting applications for the 2023 black bear hunt lottery. Successful applicants will receive a permit valid for the 6-day hunting season open October 23-28 in Allegany, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington counties.

The annual bear hunt, now in its 20th year, is an important management tool used to slow the increase of Maryland’s black bear population and limit expansion of Maryland bears into the eastern suburbs and cities. The department will once again issue 950 hunting permits this year.

Clear Lanes Are Coming to D.C. To Improve Bus Speed and Reliability

The future is looking clearer for Metrobus, as Metro and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announce the start of the 45-day minimum warning period for the Clear Lanes program. The goal is to improve bus speeds and reliability. Parked cars and vehicles illegally using dedicated bus lanes and bus stop zones slow buses down and impedes customer safety.

Under the program, cameras mounted on Metrobuses will capture video and photos of vehicles illegally operating, parking, standing, or stopping in dedicated bus lanes and bus zones. All enforcement will be handled by DDOT. Metro will not have any role in ticketing and enforcement.
