Maryland State Police Investigating Shooting At Bowie State University

Per the Maryland State Police: Maryland State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred late Saturday evening on the campus of Bowie State University. At about 11:30 p.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police College Park Barrack, who were assisting Bowie State University with security during Homecoming weekend, responded to the school’s Center for Business and Graduate Studies for a report of a shooting. According to a preliminary investigation, two male victims, both 19, were located in front of the Center for Business and Graduate Studies and were transported by ambulance by the Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. There is no indication that either victims were students of Bowie State. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators from the Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division are leading the investigation with assistance provided by troopers from the College Park Barrack and the Bowie State Police Department. Prince George’s County Police also assisted at the scene. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Bowie State Police tips line at 301-860-4688. With the U.S. experiencing over 500 mass shootings and over 25,000 motor vehicle deaths so far this year, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2023’s Safest Cities in America, with nearby cities like Columbia (Howard County) and Washington D.C. making appearances on each side of the list.

To determine where Americans can feel most protected against life’s hazards, including nonphysical forms of danger, WalletHub compared more than 180 U.S. cities across 41 key metrics (WalletHub compared 182 cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state — across three key dimensions: 1) Home & Community Safety, 2) Natural-Disaster Risk, and 3) Financial Safety). The data set ranges from traffic fatalities per capita and assaults per capita to the unemployment rate and the percentage of the population that is uninsured.

Sugarloaf Mountain Sets Reopening Date With Notable Changes

Sugarloaf Mountain, a Stronghold property, has been closed since an attempted break-in at the Strong Mansion on August 19th. Stronghold Inc., the non-profit that owns and operates the property, has announced that it will be reopening the property with notable changes. “The Stronghold property will be open to the public under these conditions beginning on October 10^th. Please enjoy the property respectfully.” The changes, per Stronghold, can be seen below:

Notable Changes: Visitors will no longer be allowed to park in the crossroads or “square”. This change will keep the intersection clear of inappropriately parked vehicles, eliminate late night loitering, and stop after hours entry onto the Stronghold property. This change will also provide a needed staging area for all EMS vehicles during emergencies.

Spirit Halloween Store Now Open in Laurel

With deals to open up shop in Germantown and Rockville falling through, and last year’s Burtonsville store not coming back, many Montgomery County residents are relying on the recently opened Rio location in Gaithersburg for their Halloween costumes and decorations. A nearby store has opened in nearby Laurel, just outside of the county, that can better-serve those who are closer to that area than Gaithersburg.

The Laurel store has taken over the former Total Wine storefront, located at 3221 Corridor Marketplace, for the Halloween season. We are told this is a larger Spirit Halloween location with more items and additional animatronics for customers to enjoy or purchase.

Attorney General Brown Announces Seizure of 37 Firearms and more than 8 Kilograms of Fentanyl Destined for the Streets of Maryland

Per the Maryland Attorney General’s Office: Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown today announced the indictments of four individuals for their roles in a criminal enterprise responsible for trafficking large amounts of fentanyl and cocaine. The investigation resulted in the seizure of 37 firearms, including three assault weapons, three handguns equipped with Glock switch attachments (allowing them to operate as fully automatic weapons), over 1,000 rounds of ammunition, and body armor. Detectives also seized over 8.5 kilograms of fentanyl, 3 kilograms of cocaine, kilogram presses, drug ledgers, and over $308,000 of narcotic proceeds. The investigation was led by the Attorney General’s Organized Crime Unit and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) through the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Program—Group 51.

Two additional defendants, who have not yet been apprehended, who received large quantities of narcotics from Rawles and Frazier and then repackaged them for street-level distribution, have been charged with conspiracy, participation in a criminal organization, volume dealer, possession of fentanyl with the intent to distribute, use of firearms in a drug trafficking crime, illegal possession of regulated firearms, and related charges. As alleged in the indictment, the investigation revealed that at least as early as August 2022 through July 2023, Ronald Rawles and Corey Frazier maintained multiple stash locations for fentanyl, cocaine, and firearms in luxury apartment buildings in Baltimore City and Howard County. Rawles and Frazier would supply mid-level narcotic dealers with bulk quantities of drugs, which they would then break down and package for further redistribution. Frazier and Rawles also supplied narcotics to street-level shops, one of which operated at the intersection of Cranston Avenue and North Woodington Road in Baltimore City.

World’s Largest Christmas Light Maze is Coming to DC

Enchant returns to Nationals Park in Washington, DC from November 24 – December 31. Enchant is a Christmas village that boasts having the largest Christmas light maze in the world. Other attractions include an ice skating trail, artisan vendors, specialty crafters, and boutiques. Tickets are $32 for adults and $24 for children.

Howard County Sheriff’s Office Mourns the Loss of Deputy Ryan Demby

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of its own after Deputy Ryan Demby was shot and killed Thursday night following an altercation at a Baltimore bar. The Sheriff’s Office released the following statement on Friday:

“The Howard County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the shocking and tragic loss of an off-duty deputy who was shot and killed in Baltimore last night. Deputy Ryan Demby was in a bar around midnight when a verbal argument broke out between other patrons. During the altercation, shots were fired and Deputy Demby was struck. The Baltimore Police Department is actively investigating the incident. Our hearts are broken for the Demby family, Ryan’s friends and colleagues, and our entire sheriff’s office family. We will continue to keep our community updated and are grateful for your support during this difficult time.”

Baltimore Orioles Agree to Deal That Will Keep the Team at Camden Yards for At Least 30 More Years

With the current lease set to expire on December 31st 2023, the Baltimore Orioles, State of Maryland, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, and the Maryland Stadium Authority announced that they have agreed to a deal that will keep the O’s at Camden Yards for at least 30 more years. The announcement was made on the scoreboard following the third inning.

As of press time, Baltimore leads Boston 1-0 in the top of the 6th inning as the team looks to win its 100th game of the season while vying for the division title.
