Governor Moore Attends 53rd Annual Taste of Maryland Agriculture Celebration

Per the State of Maryland (2/3/2023): Governor Wes Moore last evening attended the 53rd annual Taste of Maryland Agriculture Celebration at Live! Casino and Hotel in Hanover, MD. Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, Maryland Department of Agriculture Acting Secretary Kevin Atticks, and more than 700 agricultural leaders joined the governor to learn directly from producers and supporters of Maryland agricultural products and business and to induct the Fritz family of Carroll County into the Governor’s Agriculture Hall of Fame.

“For generations, Maryland’s farmers have stewarded the conservation of land and advocated tirelessly for their way of life and industry—all while putting food on our tables,” said Governor Moore. “Together we will build back our farming and agricultural industry to instill lasting strength for generations to come.”

Beyond MoCo: Maryland State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash In Prince George’s County

Per the Maryland State Police: Maryland State Police are continuing to investigate a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Thursday evening in Prince George’s County. Shortly before 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, troopers from the Maryland State Police Forestville Barrack responded to the area of Central Avenue at Campus Way in Kettering, Maryland for a report of a struck pedestrian. According to a preliminary investigation, a white truck ran the red light and struck the pedestrian, who was in the crosswalk. Investigators believe the driver left the scene, but later returned.

The pedestrian, a 34-year-old male, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was declared deceased at the scene. The road was closed for about four hours following the crash.

Beyond MoCo: 13-Year-Old Brings Loaded Gun to Prince George’s County Middle School

Per Prince George’s County Police: “The Prince George’s County Police Department is actively investigating a 13-year-old student at William Wirt Middle School in the unincorporated section of Hyattsville for bringing a loaded gun onto school property.

At approximately 11:40 am, a student alerted School Security that the 13-year-old was in possession of the gun while on school property. School Security located the student who admitted to bringing the gun to school but advised that he placed the handgun inside of a classroom. The loaded gun was recovered from a classroom drawer.

Governor Moore and the Orioles look forward to continuing the conversation about the next evolution of this critical partnership for Maryland and the City of Baltimore.

Since 1992, Oriole Park has hosted more than 2,500 events, welcoming nearly 75 million fans and generating more than $10 billion in economic impact for the benefit of both the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland. Under legislation passed by the General Assembly last year, a new lease agreement will unlock $600 million in funding for upgrades and improvements to Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The entire Orioles organization will continue to dedicate the necessary time and resources to ensure a shared vision for a reimagined Camden Yards site and revitalized surrounding downtown Baltimore area.

Beyond MoCo: Maryland State Police Seeks Assistance In Identifying Pedestrian Injured In Prince George’s County Crash

Per MCPD: Maryland State Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a male pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle Tuesday evening in Prince George’s County. The male is described as Hispanic, approximately 25 to 35 years old, approximately 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. He was wearing black jeans, black sneaker and a black hooded sweatshirt at the time of the crash.

Shortly before 6:25 p.m. on Jan. 31, troopers from the Maryland State Police College Park Barrack responded to the area of northbound Baltimore Avenue (US Route 1) in the area of Powder Mill Road in Beltsville, Maryland for a report of a pedestrian-involved crash.

Beyond MoCo: Governor Moore Celebrates Revitalization and Reopening of Baltimore’s Historic Lexington Market

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller today joined state and Baltimore City officials, development partners, and business owners to celebrate the newly revitalized and reopened Lexington Market. Today’s ribbon cutting and ceremonial bell ringing marked the opening of a new, 60,000-square-foot market building, public plaza, and the return of more than 40 businesses that will feature a mix of relocated institutions including Faidley’s Seafood and Connie’s Chicken & Waffles and new Baltimore favorites including Tio G’s Empanadas and Taharka Brothers Ice Cream.

“This transformational project shows the power of the state working together with private partners and the City of Baltimore to better serve Marylanders,” said Governor Moore. “The $45 million redevelopment of this Baltimore treasure will keep it in operation for many decades to come so it can continue to be a home to merchants, a gathering place for residents and attraction for visitors to our great state and to the city of Baltimore.”

Drug Kingpin Sentenced for Role in Criminal Organization that Distributed Large Amounts of Fentanyl and Was Responsible for Multiple Overdoses throughout Maryland and Surrounding Areas

The Maryland Attorney General released the following press release on January 26, 2023: Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown today announced the plea and sentencing of Darvin Kevin McCoy, 36, of Odenton, Maryland, on charges including drug kingpin and supervision of a criminal organization, which relate to a long-term investigation into a fentanyl distribution ring that was operating in Howard County, Baltimore City, and Baltimore County.

On January 23, 2023, McCoy pled guilty before Judge Stephanie P. Porter of the Howard County Circuit Court to several charges, including drug kingpin, supervision of a criminal organization, conspiracy to commit robbery, solicitation of robbery, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, possession of a firearm with nexus to a drug trafficking crime, possession of a large amount of fentanyl mixture, and two counts of distribution of fentanyl. The robbery charges pertained to McCoy’s role in the robbery of money, drugs, and jewelry of a co-conspirator as a sanction for transgressions against the criminal organization. McCoy was sentenced to 20 years of incarceration without the possibility of parole.

Per the State of Maryland (1.30.23): Today, Governor Wes Moore and Lt. Governor Aruna Miller joined President Biden and US. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to celebrate the partnership agreement between Amtrak and the Maryland Department of Transportation, and kickoff the B&P Tunnel Replacement Program in Baltimore. The project will replace the 150-year-old infrastructure and improve the safety, reliability, and efficiency of Maryland’s rail transportation system; saving over seven hours of train delays every weekday.

“Modernizing the Frederick Douglass Tunnel will bring new opportunities into our communities, and help secure Maryland’s transportation future,” said Governor Moore. “This project stands as more evidence of our commitment to transform transit throughout the state, and we are grateful to have the support of the Biden-Harris administration.

Two Adults and Two Children Struck by Vehicle Monday Morning in Adelphi; MCFRS Assist

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MFCRS) assisted Prince George’s County Fire and Rescue in responding to a collision on Buck Lodge Road and Riggs Road in Adelphi, MD on Monday morning. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS, four patients were transported to the hospital, including two children with Priority 2 trauma, one adult with Priority 1 trauma, and one adult with Priority 2 trauma. We will post an update when additional information becomes available.
