U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Washington Dulles International Airport seized 257 pounds of dried opium poppy pods between February 12 and February 21, 2025, from 81 shipments originating in Madrid, Spain. The controlled substances, often used to make narcotic “poppy tea,” were mislabeled as decorative items and destined for multiple addresses across the U.S., with CBP officers seizing them for destruction as part of ongoing efforts to prevent illicit drug imports. Nearly 20 years after the last CHI-CHI’S restaurant closed, the beloved Mexican chain is set to make a comeback. In December, it was announced that Michael McDermott, son of CHI-CHI’S founder, had secured the rights to use the CHI-CHI’S name on physical restaurant locations through an agreement with Hormel Foods, which owns the brand’s trademarks.
